Auto decomp spring

Was this thing changed between 2001 and now?

The new auto decomp device does not have the groove to keep the spring in place. It used to have two, now one. Does the spring need to be changed too?

Not that I cannot fix it with the Dremel, mind you.

Hah there is always something (It's ok I don't intend to ride until the end of August).

Well, Ady PMed me that the spring is not super important, as long as their is some anecdotic recoil, which will happen no matter what...

I'll post a photo soon.

The spring is very important I think. The autodecompression device is always in the on position due to constant spring tension. Once a certain rpm is reached the centrifugal force overcomes the spring tension which disables the device. So during e-starting the RPM is slow enough to not overcome the spring tension but once it fires the spring holding the device "on" is overcome. I have always thought that a stronger spring might help the 01-03's to decompress.

Indeed, I got the new spring and it recoils way faster.

Yes, and fits about the same, the shape is of the small end tip is more adapted to the new spring, the other one fit loosely. There is no groove, now.

I guess you can bend the new one to make it fit the older decomp lever.

I have all the ingredients to fix the bike, now, and a bit of time to do it, so I will tell you once the bike is up and running if I am satisfied with the new decomp lever.

RE: Re: RE: Auto decomp spring

Just replaced the spark plug on my bike and while I was at it I thought I'd crank it over on the button with the plug out. It cranked over at around 300rpm. Once I put the plug back in it cranked a few times slowly before the battery was running low but the exhaust made the thumping noise with the compression., that's a sign that my bike is close to starting. As mine doesn't start on the button, I think I'll now go and investigate the auto decomp and change it to the '04 version. I've fitted a larger starter motor but I think it's the compression that's the main show stopper now. It starts easily on the kicker.
