Kienhus is still doing well.

Anyone know what happened to Gazza and Orangeberg- both have lost big heaps of time??

Mechanical, Navigation or crash I wonder ??-or a combination of these?

hey oz, it'll be a mains for orange......woo-hoo that would piss him off! perhaps he can pull over and do them in the time i would do a puncture!

regards

Taffy

Went to Hedland in Western Aus to see the Safari, arrived late after work 2.5 hour drive . Many bikes and other compeditors and it was dark . Caught up with a few people I new competing in the event.
Word has it and it was only rumor that Gazza run an external oil cooler and it lost an oil line and done the engine, as I say this is second hand info though as I didnt catch up with him . did speak to a berg rider on a 650 with a 15 L tank with a rear side cover tank on it.
One of the riders said if you done away with all the hype , he would have run a 450 4 stroke with extra fuel and had just as much fun. This was on about day 3
The rally bikes with the weight and the power was over rated someone said. My personel preference would have been a standard berg 650 with extra fuel capcity . Light weight , power and fuel capacity.simple and cheap and reliable.

See Ya!

Brandon Kienhuis on bike no 46 finished 8th outright and 3rd in his class. His bike did not miss a beat. He did all berg owners proud and rode an exceptional race from start to finish making sure he kept on top of his map reading. Congratulations to Gary and John on the other bergs for getting them across the line. Thanks goes out to Valley Force Husaberg for there support aswell as Motoz tyres. Both these sponsors have been great and it couldn't have been done with out them. The Motoz tyres showed up most of the other tyre manufacturers as there was some issues with temperature and the amount of road km's that were being covered. Looking forward to our next adventure/ race. It was a hard slog but the berg was fantastic......

On the subject of John Young.

He was there with his mum and dad as support and I believe they did three motor change outs (as well as the other problems that we all faced) during the week. The results did not reflect the effort, these three people put in a truely courageous effort and they were really genuine down to earth people as well.
The guy could ride pretty good too, went past me in one of the tighter sections (probably the only special in the event that suited the little 450) like I was standing still.

Hi all, just got back from the Safari, 3 Bergs started and 3 Bergs finished !!!

Brandon's ride was a great effort, lots of class taking it to some of the best off-road racers in Australia as well as some top internationals who have placed very well in the Dakar previously - 8th overall on a bog stock FE 650

My FE 650 ran very well, pulled like train the whole event, hit 170kph several times in some of the fast sections, could have done around 175kph. The only problems I had where with things I added to it, not a single issue with any OEM stock parts.

It had a very fine film of oil from the weep hole for the first 500km then it stopped, the replacement seal kit from Orangeberg stayed in the spares box !!

For this Safari I am now totally convinced the 650 Berg was the ideal bike for the event, it had almost the same speed and power of a KTM 660/690 Rallye bike but with the weight and handling of a 450 enduro, the best of all worlds.

These bikes are very seriously underrated as rallye racers, they are much better than WR's, EXC's etc. Many an average punter was struggling with LC4 based 640's and 625's as well as some on rallyes when they would have placed significantly better on Berg.

It may be now due to Brandon's efforts that Husaberg Aus will now field a supported Berg rallye team for next years Safari

Oz, I had budgeted for as low as 10km/L, but I never got any where near that low, in the transports it was about 16-18km/L in the selectives it did drop to about 13-14km/L.

I was impressed with the economy particularly given the throttle usage in the selectives, I'm not an A grader like Brandon, so made up for it with the horsepower and point and shoot wherever I could  Blew past CRFX's & WR's like they were in reverse

Thats pretty good, I wasnt doing any better than that on the big 640, sometimes worse as the aircleaner on it was prone to blocking up and I think I saw as low as 12k/l. Made it a bit hard to pre estimate fuel use prior to a stage.
So the Boss tank would have held enough fuel to do the 250k between refuels yes?

Both Brandons and your bikes shone in this event (I watched closely) and had we known prior to the event what we know now I guess you may have preped your bike a little differently and avoided the unfortunate issues you had with the add ons.
I wonder how many people sat up and took notice though...... will we see a few more entered next year as a result of your efforts ????

quote] I reckon the Boss tank which is close to 17L plus with the 3L under seat tank reserve would do it, that would give you 20L = say 260km range.

For this years Safari with all the extra refuel stops available re the splash & dashes, even just the main tank could have done it. My previous Safari in '01 you really had to use all the fuel range available.

Brandon also commented he had good economy as well.

Re more Bergs next year, would be good, as said I'm convinced, best bike for the event as far as I can see !!
