As "good" but less maintenance SuperMotard ???

I guess this is the question rising from a man with family, but with a great passion for motorcycles.

I have already 2 FLSTCs with them done Sturgis twice (96-97).
Now I live here in Italy, with nothing but wine, cheece and curvy roads.
I have Monster 1000 with 99% reliability and 30000kms done in 1,5 years.
Now I am stuck to get a Husaberg, or something else, and as the business goes, I am not able to buy straight off 2005 .... but a used one (2003 1700kms FS 650 E).

Let me know, if You all have time, what else might be even close to Husaberg, without bearing changes every 10000kms.... :D
Honda ? Yamaha ? Husqy ? KTM ? .....

Try to cure me from this sickness....

NOTHING COMES CLOSE

But if you wanted something a bit heavier and with less power the KTM 660SMC or 625 SM are supposed to be ok

They would have much less maintenance required.

All the light wieght thumpers will
need attention-sorry.Only the
XR650 Honda will be substantially
more durable, but it won't be like
riding a Husaberg. If you want the
Honda-don't ride a berg.You may
throw all caution to the wind.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggghhhhhhh,

I knew You would say so....

I need to negotiate with the dealer I got (100% Great service with my Duc),
and see what else he has to offer....

Purtroppo=unfortunately, my mind is set, please try to unconvince me more....

Thanks Lloyd and Tim for Your responses,
keep them coming in....

ok, I need more comments,

now I have a chance to get 2004 FE450E.

Comments on that comparing the FS650E (used 2002) ?

Would it need other than tires and brakes to make FE450E later as SM ?

The 650 does seem to have a disproportionate share of bearing failures. Not sure if it is due to heavier increased crank mass or the RPMS that SM requires. No hard data, but it just seems like more of the failed bottom ends are in the big bores.

In addition to "street" wheels and tires, FS models also have much stronger brakes.

Thanks Carl !

Now it seems I got 3 straight forward comments that 650 or older than 2004 Husaberg will have problems either with bearings or stator system.

Were there really so many upgrades done after 2003 ? Kokusan did come for 2004, but did they change something on the bearings? Anyone have Serial number tracking data to verify really the "out of the factory" times ?

Still (strangely) I am aiming for the 2002 Fs 650 model. What attracts me is the simplicity and that still "only" 3 comments has come to tell me it will be troubles.

I did expect troubles with my Ducati, and I still bought it. I got HDs but those have been over 60k trouble free.

Husaberg should make some good feelings to me. But also KTM and XR 650 are on my list.

Somehow I am a bit hesitated to get this, even with 1 year warranty etc.

I need few more comments to make up my mine.

Sorry to bother You all,

Do the motard 650s tend to drop main bearings when not raced? There does not seem to be too much evience of dirt trim 650s doing so - even the ones being raced. If you do not intend to flog it (at least not all the time anyway!) a 650 motard might be OK.

If you do not intend to compete & like tinkering it may be worth considering getting a dirt trim bike & fitting Suzuki RGV250 wheels to it as has been done to Vegard's bike. You then have one for all seasons. :D I'm in the process of the same (except my front is Yamaha FZX250) & so far it has not been hard.

Ciao Brad !

Never been in Australia, hopefully someday.

I got such a great feedback from Italian discussion boards, www.ultramotard.com that after I get back home from my trip, I will go test ride the 2002 650 motard.

I woke up this morning with a good feeling, "buon feeling" like Valentino says.... and if the test ride is what I expect, the 650 will be mine.

The technical issues are not stopping me, I have seen other brands and they do the same. My riding will be all season, home work, fast chilling out rides to get my mind off the work and to be a better dad.

Life is too short to think too long ...
