Armor recommendations for '09/later FE 570/450/390??

I am making up a list of mods I want to make to my bike once I find a job.

High on the list, after getting suspension redone for my weight, and getting aux. fuels tanks, is some armor.

I have ridden my bike over rocks, etc., hit a few, dropped the bike a few times and so on (even looped it), with no real damage except for scratches and wear. No holes in the stock skid plate - holding up well so far.

That said, those parts are expensive and some are vulnerable (rads). I would like to protect them better to make the bike more resistant to expensive damage and to leaving me stranded somewhere in the boonies (I often ride by myself).

I am hoping the Aqualine tank will be sufficient to protect the rads, but if not I am okay with adding other protection too.

I am not concerned about appearance - although it is nice to have a nice looking bike, the bike does get scratched up - I am more concerned with preventing disabling and/or costly damage - like squashed rads, broken/cracked cases, etc. - so I want to select armor with an eye towards that end. In short, armor that protects against scratches/rubbing but not against impacts that break things is useless to me.

Therefore I am soliciting opinions on armor. As I said, I care less about looks than protection.

I am inclined to ignore the carbon fiber armor, but maybe the plastic armor is okay. Hyde?

Or will it flex enough to transfer the impact to what it protects?

For the rad guards the only thing I run on my bikes are Bullet Proof Designs. Strongest guards you can use plus they still let you use a factory fan kit. And they are almost of piece of art! I run them on both of my bikes. They are a little pricey but worth every penny. They have a life time warranty to the original owner too.

Dirt Rider mag actually had a write up on them; they had a pair on a test bike that was ridden off the side of a cliff (by mistake) and everything was bent or busted except for the rads!

Bullet Proof Designs radiator guards, rear disc guard, and chain guide guard are second to none when it comes to protection.

You ride in rocky terrain and you don't recommend a skid plate? :cuss: So what happens when you crack an engine case on some sharp rocks? It's happened to two of my ridding buddies that USE to not ride with skid plates.

BulletProof is the only way to go on the rad guards, shark fin and swingarm guard. P3 makes a nice carbon fiber pipeguard and skidplate. You can see them on Mike Lafferty's bike. Dont forget the slave cylinder guard. You can get these right from Husaberg.

The Force aluminum skip plate looks pretty beefy. I'm actually just trying to decide right now between using that or the P3 carbon fiber one. I have the P3 pipe guard on my bike it's really nice stuff!
And on another note I just ordered the Bullet Proof Designs rear disc guard and swing arm guard, in anodized blue to match my BPD rad guards.

I am thinking I may want two different skid plates. I may want one for normal riding and one for when I go on long trips into BFE by myself. In the latter case I will probably want armor like a tank and maybe even armor that carries something low like some of the rallye armor Force Accessories makes (water tank on one side, tools on the other).

I am thinking about it. Protection is the prime thing, weight slightly behind that - looks I don't give a **** about - this is a dirt bike that is already scratched up plenty. I just don't want to break something expensive or some debilitating when I am in BFE, or even just a few miles from help - that's a *****.

The force ones offer about the same amount of protection (coverage) as the standard ones by the looks.. I run there rad guards which are great though..

All the Force equip. is great! For hoops for the rads, engine skid etc. The only thing sourced outside the Force, were the motocomposite case covers. They function and look great! They get scuffed up, but some silicon spray and a wipe and look like new.

I had used Eline stuff until about 2002 when they started shipping it to Japan or Tiawan to make it. Quality went down hill so I stopped using his stuff. Don't know if Kevin fixed it yet or not though. I'll stick with P3 where I know the guys in NJ make it by hand when it's ordered.
