Aprilia RS125

A mate dropped this off today, race spec RS125. His grandson, 14 years old, had blew it up at Trac Mon, Anglesey. Sudden loss of compression and clouds of smoke! Single ring Vertex piston, small end bearing and gasket set ordered and fitted with the engine in situ but bloody hell fitting the Jesus clips with my shovel hands!
Had the pleasure of riding one of these at Mallory Park, probably the best handling bike I've ever ridden, on a 125 it's all about corner speed!
14 years old! Lucky bugger!:)

Excellent bits of kit! I remember riding a 98 model a fair few years back, didn't realise they don't really have any engine braking! First Corner was interesting!

Mrs G keeps hinting at getting a bike. Tempted with an old rs125 just to see God she gets on.

Yes! NO engine braking! That caught me out too! After a couple of laps I really felt part of the bike, changing direction so quickly compared to the 4 cylinder bikes I was used to.
C'mon Greg, your wife needs that RS.

This subject title doesn't get used enough? Must be plenty on here with other bikes, road, dirt, track old and new?
 
Aprilia's an interesting brand. There's a reaaalllly nice '02 RSV Mille R for sale locally that I'm desperately trying not to buy. Blinged to hell with titanium and full Öhlins. I've got a biiiig soft spot for the italian v-twins.

Also really keen to try one of the RS125's. Must be something really special to ride.

Yeh Tourist, I bet the Mille would be great fun to ride. I do like Aprilia's, something a bit different from the universal Japanese motorcycle. That's probably why I've got a ' berg motor in my chassis!
The RS125 uses the Rotax 122/123 motor also used in racing karts I believe. The RS250 uses a modded Suzuki RGV250 motor.

Spent the weekend as spanner monkey, a lot less tense than riding! Chips and beer and sleeping in the van.
A tumble in race one gave me a bit to do but the bike was sounding crisp all weekend.
The lad informed me that he is not fourteen but thirteen. Trying to think what I was doing at thirteen!:D

Back in the workshop! No power, smoke etc
Pulled it apart and it looks like one of the reeds went through the motor! The reed block is a V Force3, look like carbon fibre reeds.
Piston, rings, bearings, reeds, barrel, gaskets....glad I'm not paying for it! Huge deep score down the bore!

Pretty much bulletproof too, serviced a handful of them working at Swedish Italia Bike Center and never had to adjust the valves once, very purty details on them too, swingarm is to die for!
Edit: noticed there was a step in time there, style is timeless though :)
