Anyone used Lucas 10W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil?

I have a 2010 FE390:

At $25 a L, the Motorex 10W-50 is a tad expensive for me. I have found some Lucas 10W-50 full synthetic for Motocross at $11/L. Has anyone used this oil and what is your experience with it?

LUCAS Hi performance motorcycle oil. The bottle says it meets or exceeds these standards...
API SM/SL/SJ/CC/CD
JASO MA.2
ACEA A3

I'm not interested in your opinions on other oils, or a long off topic ramble about other grades to use (sorry to be blunt). I am only interested in your opinion if you have actually used this oil and what your take on it is.

Cheers Paul

I haven't used Lucas ... :)

... BUT ... I have a DR-Z, and the oil recommendations are similar-ish. People over at the Thumpertalk DR-Z400 forum have posted positive experiences with the Lucas stuff.

I sell Lucas products at the shop. It's good stuff. I can't say I have used it in a motorcycle though.

Semi-tangential: You could try it and have an oil analysis done after the first change: EVEN IF Lucas motorcycle oil were terrible and evil, then it still COULDN'T POSSIBLY kill your engine to run it for a couple of oil changes. If the oil analysis then looks fine, then you have peace of mind as you continue using it.

http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ ... $25, less than a bikeful of Motorex, so it would amount to less money and equal peace of mind in the long run. Not even such a long run actually.

(Lost Rider had his oil tested regularly by Blackstone so they will have at least one FE570 to compare your results with.)

Amazon.com: Castrol 06412 Power RS 10W-50 4-Stroke Motorcycle Oil - 1 Quart Bottle, (Pack of 6): Automotive

This is what the husaberg/ktm shop was selling in austria for 22 euros a pop. Funny that they're not using motorex over there...
been using it for over 150 hrs without issue.. less than 8 bucks a quart/liter.

That is a great price, $7.67 a quart. I just purchased 6 quarts at Cycle Gear yesterday for $9.99 regularly $12.99. At the local Yamaha KTM dealer I was told it sells for $14.99.

Canadian brother, I do not mean to disobey your desire, but I feel that you and I are running into the same issue: finding a good, cost effective oil alternative to Motorex. I recently bought a gallon of AmsOil 20W50. While this oil isn't perfect in terms of weight, AmsOil is said to be some of the best stuff in terms of quality.

Lucas oils sometimes lacks in quality when studied in comparo tests with other oils... but with our short oil-change intervals, we don't have to worry about oils breaking down too much.

Now, there is some science as to why 20W50 will last longer than 10W50, but I won't bother here. What I would like to know is where's the best place to buy the Lucas 10W50? Thanks, and hope my $0.02 may help to consolidate whatever decision you reach.

Our local Husavarna dealer (Kenco in Sooke BC) have started bringing in a 10W50 from AmsOil, I have it in my FE390 right now. It's about half the price of the Motorex.

That's close to me. Thanks. I like the Amsoil stuff and use it in my other bike. Motorex is literally liquid gold...90$ for 4L...Must cost something to produce, ship and allow some for profit margin, but ~ $25/L? I think not!

I did some more reading and the Lucan oil isn't necessarily bad. Maybe do some research for oil comparo if you want to pursue...

now, where's the best place to buy Lucas?

Cdn brethren, Can Tire has lucas oil on sale 20% off. I looked for some yesterday but the only lucas-brand oil I could find was for outboard boat motors. Let me know if you come up with a different result.

Whosaberg,

My sister uses and swears by the Amsoil as for cost. I however wont use anything but Motul. She has not had any problems in her KTM and rides endure daily in Kamloops. I do know she did allot of research as I always guide her to do when she is wanting to change something. She could not find one issue or bad point about it. I do think it is a good bang for your buck. The most important thing to oil is changing it regularly. I change my oil every second ride. I have never had a engine breakdown since the 90's and I am sure the transition to Euro bikes helped as well lol.

I used Lucas, and it was fine... Nothing special and price is okay....

I also hear people use Rotella T oil... Both synthetic and non synthetic...

Its got all the same ratings with Husa requires... look around this place there are plenty discussions on oil....

And I got mine Rotella T for I believe about 40 dollars for 9 liters Non Synthetic... Calgary Canada Walmart prices.

More oil changes for hours... but you can not beat that price. And its a nice thing to keep an eye out on shavings etc for older Bergs

I bought Rotella dyno oil. Couldn't bring myself to put it in the engine. It is reserved for the F650GS... going to continue with the AmsOil in the Berg.

Would love a cheaper alternative, but over the course of a year, the price of expensive oil isn't so bad compared to replacing worn parts. I of course have no data to say that expensive oil will better protect, but the marketing of the oil companies has worked on me I guess :).

Just a thought.

There is allot of discussion on Rotella T. I do know it was recommended by Recluse in the older systems and worked better for them. I do know lots that run it and believe in it as it is cheaper. I think that is a huge factor on why some think it is great. I am a firm believer that Diesel oil should be kept in what it was designed for. Diesel oil has special additives and detergents and as I am not a chemist or engineer of these motors so I stay far away. Different motor, temperature, running characteristics, design etc. Any oil will work even cheap bulk non syn., but what is the long term outcome and the other factors? I would be curious to know if anyone has done a study on two identical motorcycle engines running a factory approved oil against Rotella T? It would be cool to know all the factors of doing this.

The reason many of us old timers here use Delo 400 is because Dale Lineaweaver, who actively contributed here years ago, worked at Chevron when it was developed, contributing in some way to it, and recommended it. Apparently it was even sold in Husaberg labelled bottles with a very slight reformulation.

Lineaweaver Racing

I still use it in my FE501, FE650, XT250, XT1200Z, KLX300 and DR650s, as well as my Daedong tractor with no ill effects.

OTTOMH, when my FE501 approached 180 hrs it got rattly up top. The roller followers on that are a 150 hr item which I let go too long, my bad. I'd scuffed the cam too, so new camshaft and rollers and based on Dale's advice, a switch from Mobil 1 R4T to Delo 400. Now <> 600 hrs with the same cam and rollers and nothing else has changed but the oil. Works for me
