anyone messed with fork positioning in the triple clamps?

equipping a 2012 FE570 as an adventure bike but also for gnarly dirt rides. haven't touched a thing on the bike as it handles in dirt so well, but it pretty twitchy at highway speeds.

the forks sit above the top of the triple clamps by about 5mm, i'm going to drop them to so they sit flush, in effect raising the front end of the bike and hopefully gain some high speed stability and not lose too much in terms of cornering in the gnarly stuff.

i'll mess around with this tomorrow but just wondering if anyone has already done this, what your results were for dirt and road riding, and whether you were happy with it.

i'm aware some guys lower the rear end instead, but i'm way tall so don't mind a bit of extra clearance.

Re: anyone messed with fork positioning in the triple clamps

I've been riding mine for the last two weekends with all my Rllye clocks fitted. I've been riding on enduro tracks - I wonder if my tests are valid? :D :D

firstly, the forks are poor on the 2009-10 so if you haven't had them sorted I think you'll find that they are the problem and cause of the head shake.

I run with my forks up and through by about 8mm because I must feel confident in the front end and you can't re-insert that confidence once it has gone.

Now they are through by 20mm because I have lowered the rear with the X-bushing but this was done for handling and not because I'm a short arse!

making the forks flush with the top of the triple clamps worked nicely. gnarly dirt ride all day yesterday and she still turned well, and felt more stable at highway speeds. personally this feels like a good compromise for a mix of dirt and adventure/road riding.

Re: anyone messed with fork positioning in the triple clamps

I run a stabilizer on my 570 but not to limit head shake. I dont think my bike has ever shaken its head at me in anger! I put it on because I was getting bad arm pump when riding that I never got when riding my 550. I don't think the 570 really needs the stabilizer but I have got used to the way it feels and my pump was relieved quite a bit. Although alot of the pump was probably because I was holding onto the thing so tightly when I first rode it!!! Also I cut the forearm straps off my body armor as I found them to be restrictive, this helped eliminate the pump altogether. Is it just me or does every bit of kit that I buy in XL or XXL seem to be designed for fat guys? Heaps of room in the body and no room in the arms!

suspension and handling are so subjective I'm not sure why I or anyone else offers anyone any advice. no two people want the same thing yet whenever I do someone's suspension to my specs they love it. you then invite them to give objective feedback and they say the opposite of what is happening technically after the work.

as long as everyone is happy hey! :D :D

 yep, it's like oil and tire threads. anyone's opinion on suspension is subject to current atmospheric pressure, ambient temperature, and how well their relationship is going at the time.

Re: anyone messed with fork positioning in the triple clamps

With all the suspension testing and setup I've done over the years, when everything is dialed with springs and valving, an average rider can tell the difference when forks are moved up or down 3 mm, maybe 2 mm. Good/fast riders can pick 1 mm. But you've got to have everything else fixed, else you end up chasing your tail.

I agree Steve

my comment wasn't aimed at the fella that started the thread BUT now the next point would be relevant to him though and that is that when a bike is relatively new to you you will have the clickers and springs pinging everywhere as you adjust to suit and then get quicker yourself etc.

I work hard to get the suspension right before tackling handling and then like you I can feel those differences. I then will change the suspension again and again as well as 'handling' items.

right now anti squat bushes are giving me the most fun! :D
