Anyone fitted a 52 tooth rear sprocket?

I find I'm lugging the engine in second gear more than I'd like on tight trails. The stock gearing is 15/48. One tooth lower in the front (14) would be fine, but I prefer to go larger on the rear. Keeping the 15 on the front will make for a longer life for the chain and sliders. I think 15/52 would work well to minimize clutch slipping when I get in a tough spot. A 52 sprocket will likely require slotting the chain guide holes. Recommendations?

14/52 tooth rear: Or 13 x 49. Racing purposes or very steep ascents. Ideal in woods and deep mud-the 14T front means less wear. File lower rear chain guide and lower as far as possible by filing the hole oval. Why not go 13T until a new set of C & S are required and then get the extra link? It allows the rider to have excellent engine braking, to never stall on logs, the bike drops into a corner and lifts coming out. This is a different way to 'gear' a bike compared to the CR sixth gear mod below (see engine tuning).

try and look at the doc a bit more neal. you'll find a lot there mate!

Stock gearing on the 450 is 14/48. I'm assuming yours is a 650, although perhaps the 550 also comes with 15/48. Anyway, the chassis is the same, so a 14t countersprocket would simply be taking you to what is stock on the "little" bikes.

FYI, I changed to a 13t when I bought the bike, thinking I'd try that gearing for awhile and then go back to stock in front and up in back. Frankly, I've been very surprised at the life I've gotten from the final drive components, and am just now ready to swap. I've felt like mine is geared too low, so I'm going to 14/50. I'll get another 13t for my next ride at high elevation with technical riding. 1st gear will be a real granny, but that's ok because I don't do much 6th gear riding in those areas.

Hi Neil,

I started running a 16/52 set up on my 01 501 when I wore out the first set of 15/48. There were two reasons I went with this set up. 1 was to pro long the components life, and 2, to keep the chain wheels in line with each other as much as possible to make for better suspension action. This was a trick used by MC, I'm no MC but hey, if he thought it was a good idea then I figured it was worth a try. The theory goes something like this, there is less binding when the wheel is at extreme deflections and is supposed to make the suspension action smoother. Next time you have your shock off do a bit of experimenting and you'll see what I mean.

On my 04 550, the bike came geared 14/48. According to the book it is supposed to be 15/48. I never knew this until it was time to change out the components and that's when I discovered it. I was actually attempting to set it up with the 16/52 arraingement but, I couldn't get the chain to fit right. One link extra was too much and one less link was too little. If I was running a lower profile tire the 16/52 set up would have worked. However, I run a Pirrelli 120/100 MT 18 Heavy Duty tire and this tire is quite tall, and works good for the desert. At this time I am running a 15/52 set up on my 04 550. This is a great combo as far as I'm concerned. First gear is a real rock crawler, and sixth gear WOT gives about 100 mph. With this set up you can cruise comfortably at 60mph without revving too much. When the time comes to change out components again, I will go with the 15/52 set up again.

So, to get to your point. On the 01 bike I had to modify the chain slider to get enough clearance. On the 04, no modification was necessary.

Sorry to make you guess which machine. I can't get the signature line to display no matter how I set it in my profile. *EDIT* Hey it works now!

I just ordered an Iroman 52T from Dan at MotoXotica.
