Any way to make a 2002 400 berg larger like a 501 or 550?

What would need to be done etc?

or is it a waste of $$$$$$

100mm piston/liner for 470ccs . I think the 400 and 470 share the same cases.

Personlly, I would do it when you are due for a rebuild to keep costs down, but that is your call.

As soon as you want 501 etc it involves the crank and that starts getting real pricey, unless you can source 2nd hand bits.

the 470 needs the 100mm linar, 100mm piston, a larger little end bush and away you go. there is a 100mm piston and linar for sale on the european ebay right now.

the 501 is a 470 with a longer stroke but smaller bore at 95mm. if you then keep the 501s stroke and go back to the 100mm piston again you have a 550.

try this. ask them if they'll send it to australia.

no!

i have alreadty paid for a 97mm piston so that with my 400 crank i will have a 450. it'll have a 3mm longer stroke but smaller bore than the present 450.

i may have bought the kit on ebay if i'd known it was coming up.

Has anyone on the site already done these mods

no need to change valves etc?

several and there are no problems as you are essentially setting the bike to standard. the 470 would i believe have a bigger carb.

you should order new piston GP circlips.

Doesn't the 400 use the small port/valve head with a smaller combustion chamber or was that only on the pre 2001 motors? If so compression ratios could be interesting.

i don't know about that. if someone checks the parts books the difference is 35/27 to 37/30. on the SV head the inlet ports are almost too big but the exhaust valves and ports are too small.

stop complicating things! let the lad have a go!

BTW-i have a BV head and a SV spre soon...

Hi guys,

I have already done this:
I have rebuilt a 400ccm engine with the 100mm cylinder and piston from woessner.
I took the cylinder head of the 501 and that was all.
The power of the engine is good, but not that much like the ´04 450.
But on the other hand the power is maybe easier to control. And maybe I have a bit more torque but the 450 is quicker when reviting.

My next step would be to bore out the in and outtake valve seats and use bigger valves. But right now I think it´s not necessary.

In fact, I had a 501 before and have a crankcase on stock, also a 501 crankshaft, used cylinder and piston (95mm diameter) and also a new cylinder. I would also think about to get rid of these parts :D
I´m not sure if it´s the right way to use the 400 cylinder head on a 501,
but because of a damage and no other available parts, a guy here
in my region, has already done this.
The 501 engine also runs with the 400 head, maybe with some lack of power......

you don't want to port OUT the inlets on any of the husey heads!!!! just the exhaust ports. as i have shown in a recent test-the exhaust port and headers are too small-even on the 400.

FYI

To increase the capacity from 400 to 501/550 you would also need to change the crank cases.

The cases were shared between: 400/470, 501/550 and the 650.

The interesting thing is they used to list the crankshafts a different part numbers between the 400 and 470 despite being the same stroke. They did this for the 501/550 too.

Cheers,
Simon

despite the 400 and 470 having the same stroke and therefore also con rod, the rod comes with a bigger L/E bush for the 470. thus different part numbers but you can use the same assembly-just shoot out one bush for another.

Hribmans method of the 100MM piston with a used 501 head gets my vote. Would duplicate a factory 470. A simple route is a 95MM 501 piston with all other stock 400 parts to get a 430. A little more displacement and compression as well as unshrouding the valve a bit will help performance. Since hribman has a good 95MM setup for sale would be Taffy approved (a bargain). :)

Well, I did this to me old FE350, but it had dropped a valve and needed a piston, cylinder, head and valves anyway. Added a 501 piston, head and valves and made a 427 berg. Good engine. Went from a revver to a grunter.

However, if your engine is sound, just sell it and buy a 470 or 501. You will save lots of money.
