Any tricks to Cold starting a 2001 FE501e?

Let me say I am new to the site and I have recently aquired a 2001 FE501E and I absolutley love it. But I was wondering if any of the seasoned berg owners out there could give me some tips on starting. The reason I bought the bike aside from being awsome is because my 2002 KTM 520 SX cannot be made street legal in CA, but the 2001 berg I purchased has a plate so I can ride it on the street, sweet! I have taken the delorotto PMH40 apart cleaned all of the internals and put it back on the bike. I then spent 10 min kicking it over trying to get the thing started. Once started it purred, and it ran like a champ! (better acceleration then my 520). I just want to know if there are any cold starting methods for this machine so next time I dont pass out trying to start it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The Pre 04 bikes all seem to have there own drill for starting. This is the one that worked for me.
Cold
Pull out the choke.

1) Pull in the manual decompressor on the bars.
2) Open the throttle
3) Kick the bike through 5 times using full and complete strokes (this should clear out and partially burned or perculated fuel)
4) Bring it up to TDC and give it a full stroke kick (do not cheat it at the top). if it does not start by the second kick. Repeat the whole process.
If at any time you smell fuel from the exhaust and the bike has not started, remove the choke.

It will usually start.
Hot

There are numerous tips to improve starting in "The doc"
You should read through it, it may save you a lot of grief.

I used to have a 2002 FE650e and what I found worked the best was to get the piston up on compression with the kick start lever then, using the manual decomp lever, bringing it to just past TDC, letting the kickstart lever return to the top and giving it a steady kick. Doing it this way the bike always started on the 1st or 2nd kick cold and usually the 1st when warmed up. I used the same technique on the '96 FE501 without using the manual decomp lever but it spun over much easier than 650 or my current '05 FE550e since it didn't have an electric starter or a counter-balancer shaft to have to spin. This morning before a race I had to start my 550 using the above technique as it was a bit cold (the electric starter struggles in cold weather) and it was one kick, however, the newer ignition and Keihin carb make starting a bit easier than what your bike is equiped with.

well it seems that the berg likes:
Choke on, pull in the decomp lever on the bars, 5-8 kicks. Turn choke off, pull in the decomp lever on the bars again another few kicks. Then find TDC and within 2 hard kicks if fires off and purrs! Once I found out the "way" to start the bike my foot is not sore any more! Thanks for all the input to those who submitted replies.

You are still working way too hard to start your bike. The fuel screw may be too lean and you may need to put a richer needle jet in it. On my '02 FE650 I went from a 270 to a 274 needle jet and, if I remember right, the fuel screw at about 3 turns out. The bike should start in 1-2 kicks by just using the choke, finding TDC, and giving it a firm, solid kick.

Check out some of my hard starting posts.

I finally came up with a system like yours, choke out choke out / Just past TDC / long hard kicks - do the hokey kokey & turn around..

Worked fine for a bit but gradually got harder & harder till I could bearly face using the bike......

SPARKS STATOR......

So easy to kick start hot or cold. Just been working on the electrics tonight, standing by the side of the bike & starting it 1st kick every time - not even hard kicks - so easy. I know they're a lot of money but whats the use of a bike that p~sses you off !!

Thanks to all those who contributed, the berg is now a two kick starter! new K51 needle and a dell-orto rebuild kit from Dan at moto exotica sealed the deal. I have to say to whoever reads this post in the future, finding TDC is the key. And watch the video of the guy starting the KTM it helped me understand the whole process.
Now for the next adventure of trying to stay on the bike and start it with my left leg!

Do you have the link for the video with the KTM guy?

I'm having fits trying to kick start my 2006 650.
