Any thoughts on rear Michelin M12XC

Hi its time to replace the rear tyre on my 570, I mainly ride rocks and gravel with a bit of hard pack dirt thrown in, the burg had a Kenda carlsbad on it when I bought it but it shredded it pretty quick so has any one used a Michelin M12XC on the rear in these conditions, thanks for your thoughts

Those Michelins SUCK! they are marginal when new and worthless when worn. In rocks and gravel... Well just about anything will work for a while, If you want a tire to last a long time try a Dunlop 739at or D606, Pirelli make a pretty decent intermediate tire as well. But the hands down best you will find is a Bridgestone M404...

Mich M12s won't last more than a ride or two here in the rocks. I like Dunlop 952s for the rocky terrain I ride. Decent grip and life combined for the back. I like BS201s and Dunlop 773s up front. Both are superseded now and I haven't tried their successors, as I still have some in stock.

are people complaining about the M12 or the M12XC as they are two different tyres.

Previously used a M12xc on the rear and had just as much success with a Bridgy 404

Personally i cant go past the dunlop 952 with the big block machines, i have one on my 570 and it is great, it has offset knobbs and with the extra hp it has more rubber on the ground and lasts well.

Thanks for the opinions guy's I've decided to go with a Dunlop MX51 instead, I had one on my KTM 380 and that seemed to handle the conditions we ride in ok will be interesting to see how it goes on the 570

I would be interested on hearing your feedback on the tyre you selected, i have heard some reasonable reports.
cheers

Coops570,

I have used the Dunlop Geomax51 on my 570 and 525EXC last summer and was pleasantly surprised. In the alpine country where i live i found it to be a reasonable compromise between the rocks , occasional muddy ruts and lifetime.
I have also used the Dunlop 952 as previously mentioned and found them to be very durable/economical but sacrificing in grip when needed (excellent in the real sharp rocks)

Front tyre - have always used S12. Should try something different one day!

Thats all you need to know right there, totally agree. I'm running my second now and it seems to be the best tyre even after a bit of use.
I ride every sort of terrain except snow, Dunflops are great for the first ride, as soon as you loose the leading edge of the knob they slip all over the place.

Agree, i also like the 404 rears. However, their life certainly has a lot to do with your suspension, i had one on for what seemed like ages and showed little signs of wear even after riding on tar sections. However, when i started to play around with my sag and springs and got it wrong i almost wore through half a tire in a ride.

The M12 FRONT tire is my absolute favorite, the rear is horrible. The MX51 and M404 rears have outstanding traction but wear quite quickly in any amount of rocks. Normally that is the tradeoff though, traction=faster wear.

I tried a M12 rear on a 250SX and it didn't last, plus was dismayed to find it was directional - can't flip it. I don't know if the XC is directional. I like the Bridgestones that come stock and the Dunlop 952 does last a long time under rocky conditions. I am trying a set of Kenda Washougals on my KTM Ramon - they grip well without stepping out and are wearing well, but I don't ride that bike much anymore.

Hi roberger after a couple of rides I dont think I will fit another MX51, it doesnt seem to suit my 570 as well as it did on my previous bike and this is with riding on the same tracks, it seems to spin up alot easier and doesnt feel as though its hooking up as well as the Kenda washougal that was on the 570 when I bought it, I have fitted a map switch though which is permanently on the aggresive setting so this may have a bearing on the grip factor also it has used 2/3rds of the tread depth in 320 kilometres so it's ready for the scrap heap maybe I should go for the MX71 hard terrain dunlop or the bridgestone 404 that gets good reviews on here and other sites

The XC is just their new rubber compound for longer lasting wear, identical tread pattern.

There aren't many tires out there for the FE 650, looking for 140/80-18. The S12 XC is one of the very few.

I'm not crazy about the stock tire - 6 days extreme, well worn after 16 hours, no grip on rocks or roots. Great in mud.

Well, maybe I'm wrong about size. Every cross-reference I can find says something different.

This is totally confusing to me (from Motorcyclesuperstore.com):

Tire size cross reference:
120/90-18 (100/100-18)
130/80-18 (110/100-18)
140/80-18 (120/90-18)
120/80-19 (100/90-19)
130/70-19 (110/90-19)

In South Africa, the latest tyre everybody raves about is the MITAS. I have never used one, but most guys love them, even Chris Birch and the Alfie Cox race team are using them for our off-road and enduro races. They have a wide selection, sometimes confusing so many choices.

Mitas is the old Czecho Barum reinvented. I believe that Michelin has some involvement with them. Michelin owns Trellborg FWIW.

I've been using Mitas CO2s on the Bergs on and off for years, great wear and OK traction. I've also been using Mitas E07s on my DR650 tourer, 7,000 kms out of the last, with everything from highway to rocky firetrails and slop included.

Hi Guys just thought I'd let you know how a rear bridgestone M404 went after the dunlop mx51 that only lasted a usable 320km, the 404 has HALF 8O the wear of the dunlop after riding on the same tracks for the same distance and not much difference in grip so looks like that will be my tyre of choice from know on
