Any 350's out there? Mine's running badly.

Hello,

Over the past several months, I've been putting my '95 FE 350 back into proper order and have learned a LOT from these boards. My thanks to everyone who unselfishly shares their experience and knowledge here.

Is there anyone else out there running a 350? It doesn't seem to have been a very popular bike and it is very difficult, almost impossible, to get information about this engine. I'm certainly no expert but am willing to share what I've learned doing rehab to his beast - and a few pictures if they help anyone.

Now my question. The bike is running very poorly. I've done the valve adjustment, had the stator tuned up by Sparks (who does a fantastic job), have gone through the carb, and is has a new plug.

I had the top end apart to check for worn parts, etc, and when I put it back together can't be sure I wan't off by a tooth in the timing. How can I tell if I'm off a tooth and how can I check/adjust the timing? The bike starts fairly well - not more than 5 kicks, but won't idle and runs very roughly - backfiring here and there.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
GymX

hello,
before you check anything make sure that your spark plug has the right clearance(7mm)
if yes then..
find the TDC using a comparator or anything can get inside the spark plug hole and CANNOT break.
make a mark on to the case and a mark on to the flywheel to use later as a reference to tdc.
then with the camshaft lobes facing down (11' and 1' o'clock) you connect the cam chain.you will notice that the two screws of the cam gear will also align in this position horizontaly with the horizontal line of the cylinder head.
then screw in the tensioner and check again if the above situation still stands and adjust if necessary.

Thanks Oyk. I'll check the plug before pulling anything apart

You may need to put a new needle and needle jet in the old dellorto, when these are worn they give the symptom of an electrical fault of miss firing off the bottom and once the slide is over half open the motors runs strong. If you problem is similar please check the above.
Best Regards

It does run much beter with the throttle open more. I think I'll check the plug first, as Oyk suggests, then move to the needle and jet and go to the timing last.

I appreciate the suggestions.
