QUESTION 1:
I'm deciding to put fresh oil but I don't have any filter yet..
so will it be ok to change the oil without changing the filter.. I'll put castrol GPS 10W-40 semisynthetic.
In fact the only shop where I can order the filter in Turkey, has non in stock. :(

QUESTION 2:
I checked the spark plug / it looks carbon fouled. Are these machines tuned rich from the factory? will it be wise to lean it or if I lean it will it cause the engine get hotter?? confused

QUESTION 3:
I think I'll have to do my first valve adjustment soon ( first in my life :)).
But the valve inspection hole in the front is so close to the radiator. Is it possible to inspect and adjust the valves without removing the radiator because it's not that practical.

QUESTION 4:
The ignition cover of my bike (2004 fe450) has no inspection hole like the one in 2003.. will engine oil come out when I remove the ignition cover and will I be able to use the same gasket?.. or is it a must to remove the ignition cover for finding the TDC

I know, so many questions.. :( but be patient and just fill me up with info in order to get rid of my endless questions as soon as possible :) I'm a fast learner

thankyou all,

Mesut

I suppose it depends on how old the filter is. I would be wary of a filter with more than say 12-15 hours on it assuming that the motor is well broken in. You are a good candidate for a Scott's or equivalent reusable filter. If it is an emergency you might be ale to slosh the filter around in some automotive lacquer thinner or gasoline to clean it but this is at your own risk and judgement.

Here in the U.S. they are jetted a bit lean. Try installing a new plug, run it for a few hours and then take a look. I'll bet your plug is just old and its time for replacement.

Its possible to adjust the valves without removing the radiator. Do a search and check out the various tools. Motion Pro makes some good stuff.

The ignition cover can be removed without worry as it is not in a oil bath. The gasket can be reused.

Mesut,

Husabutt did a good job of answering your questions I recon. Just one little tid-bit of info, cut/grind the small end of a 4mm allen wrench down until you are about 5mm from the bend. This should give you a specialty wrench for the valve cover screws. The valves in the front (exhaust) can be done w/o removing the radiator but it helps to have a really long screwdriver.... some may prefer the short, but I like to keep the area open so I can see better.

Hope this helps,

A cut down ball end Allen key is good to remove the covers and the 1/8, or 45 degree turn method detailed on the site works fine for valve adjustment

1) keep using the original oil filter-no problem

2) ignore your inspection of the plug. replace it after two-years. if you want to jet it better-go to the long thread on jetting that was at the top earlier this week and LEARN!!!!

3) yes you can do the tappets with the radiator in situ-no problem. as the boys say-you need to cut down a 4mm allen key to work or as i did-i got a free 'S' shaped 4mm allen key when i bought a new cabinet for the bedroom!

4) you can pull the ignition cover off no problem as there is no oil in there. to put it back on-use silicon and throw away the 'O' ring.

Thankyou very much guys,

You really help me beyond my expectations. I know I'll find new subjects to ask questions in the future but for now I feel confident enough to start working on the bike..

safe rides,

wow, no comments on the oil type and viscosity ??
isn't everyone running 10/50 or 15/50 Ester based Synthetic.....? or am I just Oil Anal ?

Mesut

I am using Motul 300v Ester fully synthetic, recommended by my dealer.
As for finding TDC I don`t bother taking the inspection cover of. I stick a long zip tie down the plug hole and turn the engine over by hand (engine in top gear and use back wheel to fine adjust) make sure all valves are in the closed position and find where the zip tie gets to highest position. This method works for me I have used it on all my 4 strokes over the years and i find it is quicker than taking engine covers of and finding timing marks which some times aren`t very acurate.
