For the second consecutive year, the Dakar caravan was stricken on the route towards Kiffa. Australian rider Andy Caldecott, victim of a massive accident, was killed instantly at km 250 of the stage.

To Andy's family and friends our thought are with you at this time and he will be missed by many who saw him as an Australian Hero and Legend.

The organisers of the 28th edition of the Dakar have learnt today, Monday the 9th of January 2006, the death of KTM rider n°10 Andy Caldecott.

At km 250 of stage 9 between Nouakchott and Kiffa, on a fast portion, the Australian biker suffered a bad crash. and died.

Aware of the accident at 11:31AM, the rally headquarters immediately sent a medical helicopter that landed at 11:55 AM on the scene of the accident. The doctors unfortunately could only note the death of the biker that according to them struck immediately.

Andy Caldecott, 41 years of age, was competing in his third Dakar. He had finished 6th of the 2005 edition and was currently 10th overall of this edition after having won stage 5 between Nador and Er-Rachidia in Morocco.

Godspeed Andy, I didn't know you, but anyone riding the Dakar is a brave soul indeed. What a tragic waste.

They limited the displacement, and also the top speed to 160 kmh. Also no GPS so the riders now have to slow down and look for the trail.

Those who saw the crash said he did not see a hump and took it at 150 kmh (that's about 90 mph), did not prepare for the jump and endoed.

It's like that every year, now, and only KTM riders.

I don't think KTM is getting the best publicity out of this. I would not be surprised if they rethought their rally strategy, either by pulling out totally, or by creating different models, a bit less heavy and better suspended than the Adventures. Great DS bikes, Dakar winners, but rider killers.

Thierry Sabine, who created the race, was a client of my mom, by the way, he lived two villages over from mine, so I know how it feels when that type of tragedy strikes. Someone dies for his passion, leaves loved ones behind...

A tragegy for sure........ But like all great adventures there is risk, and without risk there is no growth and no gain. Such is the sustenance of the human spirit, to grow or gain through risk, or adventure, whatever that may be to an individual. To some, getting that new flat of pansy's for the garden get's it done. For others, it takes the challenge of conquering a vast frontier, and, not just challenging the frontier, but each other as well. Or perhaps, just challenging oneself. Sabine, the creator of the Dakar was killed during a dakar rally in a helicopeter crash. Such is life, for none of us is going to get out of it alive. So live your own life, for you shall surely die your own death..........

I'm sorry for the loss that his family is enduring, it is a pain like no other. But, for Andy whom I'm sure didn't want to go, well, at least he passed in the pursuit of his chosen passion, immortalized in the history of the Dakar.

I heard the news 8 hrs ago and was stunned.

Meoni last year, now Andy.

For those that dont know, Andy owned/operated Caldecott Motors in a small town called Keith, in South Australia.

His dealership sells Husabergs and KTMs. When you were dealing with him, you were talking to a fellow rider. Not a salesman.

Whether it was Dakar, The Australian Safari, The Finke Desert Race or a local race like the former ThumperNats series, we always followed his sucess.

My condolences to his family, friends and workmates.

RIP Andy.

Ausberg,

Do you have an address, and perhaps the name of his wife so a yank could send a letter of condolences?

A little boy was killed, that's even worse than a rider, who knows the danger and is paid for it. That's the sad part of rallye racing where spectators assist to the races on the side of the road.

Thats very sad I never heard that. What stage did this occur at Lefrog?

Anyway, Coma won today on a KTM 660 and two former French skiers (both former world champions, interesting) won in the automobile side. As usual, nobody cares about the trucks, which is a shame, but that's life.

It's really interesting to see what type of bikes were in the rallye this year. Behind the big block of KTM 660 (the bigger bikes are now banned), there are a few interesting models, a few WRF 450, but also quite a few 525 EXCs, and no Husaberg.

Besides the lack of large tanks issue (which can be solved by a custom design) what prevents any Berg from joining?

There even were a few DRZ 400, a GasGas and... a BMW V-ROD !!!

It's amazing to me that more people are not killed in this rally as well as WRC

Did you watch Dust to Glory? Some scenes are scary, the drivers/riders are very close to the crowd and they are GASSING IT like there is no tomorrow.

Especially the Class 1s and the trophy trucks. These things are bouncing left and right and the crowd loves the thrill of seeing these vehicles pass a couple feet from their faces.

Completamente loco.

whats with the lack of bergs?

Not a rallye bike due to lack of desert tanks, I guess. Also the misconception that they are not reliable. Nobody wants to break in the middle of the desert.

But if a 525 EXC can make it, why not an FE650?
