delighted to find my long awaited used frame on the porch this evening that i've purchased. it's from an '04 and that really is all i know. got it from the importer here in the UK. i'd told him and my dealer that i was looking for the new quicker stearing head angle.

i said no more than that. i paid good money for it - £250 which is $450.

it's got no chassis number plate on it, plus the farme number infront of the steering head, "HB04" stamped at the base of the spine frame but the VIN plate on the left side of the steering head has been removed.

thing is my bike's going to look really good on the road with no chassis number and what about the annual MOT when they look for one on it? not to mention the motorcycle racing clubs that request a chassis number in order to help stanp out theft.

what benefit does he get from denying me the chassis plate?

is it me or is it him?

should have a frame no stamped in the headstock taff ? if not have word with clarkee me thinks

Does the paint appear to be original? Any grinder marks where a VIN stamping may have been?

gruntenberg i have updated that opening post.

more anon.

well maybe i owe some sort of an apology here as i don't wanna 'dis' them for nowt. yes i do have a frame number and the tenth digit is a number and the number is '4'. won't give the whole chassis number here but it goes:

UBKHUA40X4M7716#

just thought it was a bit off to take off the plate that's all.

yes there are several bits of paintwork and i take it that these are just to show he cares... so i think i'll shut up. the frame is in good nick and it has the reinforced webbing around the SA pivot also.

i look forward to testing it someday but may need to rebuild this engine in my old chassis for now. not sure....

don't know if there is any other reason for taking the vin plate off but won't it have had the old engine number on it?

which would'nt have applied to yours, as your fitting the old engine in it?

read something that when doing swaps such as this you can apply for a new vin showing all the correct details.

my 03 ain't got a vin plate and have had no probs with mot or registering it.

Taffy,
I have a couple 04 bergs here, new and used, and they do not have VIN plates on any of them.Husaberg only apply a sticker to the steering head, sometimes with the date of manufacture in felt pen.The VIN # is stamped in the steering stem but it is not unusual for the sticker to last only a few washings.

I believe replacement frames do not come with VINs and that you stamp the old VIN onto the new frame.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner.

However, laws vary from country to country, so UK bikes may require that the manufacturer affix a plate rather than a sticker.

I have complete confidence that Taffy will be able to sort it out ;)

Cheers,

Brett

UBKHUA40X4M7716#

what can we learn from this code BTW?

UBKHUA
40 means that it's a 400/450 in this case
X
4 = 2004 manufacture
M
7716#

just interested...

The first letter is the code for the manufacturer in this case KTM,the next specifies the country of origin, the third identifies vehicle type,4th t0 8th identifies vehicle features ie.. engine type,off-road,10th identifes model year,11th assembly plant,12-17 number sequence on production run.
