Am I (re)tarded for life?

Hey Guys,

Hoping to get a little empathy... ;)

After years of riding SuMo's I recently started looking around at some other bikes, thinking it was time for a change, or time to grow out of my "'tard phase"

Bike registration and insurance in NZ is pretty expensive, so I can only afford the 1 street legal bike...

I recently rode the MV Brutale B4 750, B3 800 & Rivale. Also the Ducati 821 Monster and Hypermotard. The Street Triple (not the R), Yamaha MT-09 and the KTM Duke 690 R...

They were all pretty cool, the B3 800 was my favourite, but was surprised that nothing gave me grin-factor that the FS does

Where are you guys at with your bikes? Is there life after 'tards? I think I'll be riding my FS for a while yet.

I actually started on street fighters for my street bikes and had my MX bikes "Though I mostly used them for Enduro/trails".

I really only got into Supermoto's out of a whim. Here in MN no one was doing supermoto. In-fact it was actually illegal until just a few years ago "unless previously registered". I had my 2010 KX450 at the time and wanted more use out of it. So I built it up. Registering it was a pain if I didnt have my MSO it wouldn't even have been possible. "Always keep you're MSO's people regardless if you plan on registering them or not."

I really enjoy the motards. They are fun quick and agile. But they carry some big inherent down falls.

That being said, Motards should realistically be the second bike. Not the main.

I personally recommend you look into more Naked bikes. They are great all rounders.

I am disappointed you didn't ride the 1290R Superduke. Its as expensive as all get out but **** its an incredible bike. That 1290 V-Twin is in my opinion one of the greatest V-Twins ever made.

Also, Check out the Aprilia Tuono's they handle like no other.

If MV is you're dream bike like mine. Ether go for the 800's or you might be interested in waiting for their all new 1000's they are working on. They will be revealing three all new 1,000's early next year to replace the current F4, Brutale, and adding a 1,000cc version of the Veloce. The 1,000 will always be the MV premium line. Where as the Triples are merely MV's bait : )

I also like naked bikes for the road I did a testride on mv b3 800 to awesome bike isn't it very agressive powerwheely's 3th gear no problem:p
But the for the price you pay on mv I think the bike is not good enough....
Triumph is cheaper and built so much better (better controls and finish).
But the problem with triumph is I think the 1050 is a tad to big and heavy and it does not give me the thrills I get on the 675 but the 675 (awesome bike btw) is (for me) just not enough if they would make something in between with al new engine/light chasis like the 675 say 800cc that would be one hell of a bike:cool:
I prevously owned a 675 street triple for 2 years the old model that was such a fun bike!!!
The new one is lighter but I don't like that they changed the gearing 1st long gear and than short ones the old one had shorter first gears making it more fun in slow stuff and it could wheely in 2nd gear realy easily nice motors those triples!

Also like that suzuki 1000 naked altough it's a bit pricey and the looks are not realy spectacular...
Don' know why but do'nt like v twins I barely ridden one and if I did I was never realy impressed with it...

Try the KTM superduke 1290R. Trust me it will blow you're mind. I have never really been a V-Twin person too but that thing is a monster.

I love my Triple such a great engine. But yeah I know what you mean about the newer S3's. "I prefer my 07 to any of the newer ones." That bike really needs a revamp to be relevant still. But its still a great bike which can ONLY be topped by some of the latest and greatest.

Suzuki still makes bike?! LOL Just kidding. But seriously why would a Suzuki of all bikes be expensive?

Riding FS570 for Me is like riding my mx bike when I was a kid. But I Don't have to run from the Cops. It's great for short trips 150 miles & under. Yes I'm (re)tarded for life also. Some day I might get something else (street bike) if I have the Money but it will never be as good as a motard.

Yes the 1050 is getting a bit outdated now but still a great bike none the less...
The 1290 seems like a beast yes but so expensive I just couldn't spend that kind of money on a bike (says me who modded 1000€ on the 570:p )

With expensive suzuki I mean compared to a middclas naked bike it's a lot of extra € (compare price with street triple for example).
Compared to a superduke that suzuki is a bargain I am pretty sure the suzuki is a better bike than let's say z1000/cb 1000r z1000=to heavy and engine on suzuki is better the cb1000r is just plain boring (ridden it).

But for the moment there is not realy a bike I am very tempted to buy but I don't do a lot of testrides lately (maybe better for my bank acount if I would be blown away by some bike:p ).
I don't have the time to ride an extra bike anyway lateley I barely ride my hsb wich is my only streetlegal bike now:rolleyes:

I guy I rode with had a superenduro collecting dust.
He commuted on a 690smc, and had a 530exc for DS and single track.

He ended up converting the 950SE to a SM950 with super duke wheels, and did a single 320mm brake up front.

Full length suspension and loads of ground clearance.
Now it's his go-to bike for commuting, day rides, weekender, fire roads ect.

Not his bike, but what more could a guy want?

Except maybe a rc8 swap.

Stolen from advrider, This bike was yellowpig's I think.

The FS/FE is a great tard, but the ~600mi oil changes can get really old if you're riding regularly.
That's the nice advantage of the bigger/heavier bikes, 3000ish mile oil changes.

Thanks for all the ideas guys.

I am constrained by $ and also garage space, so can only have the 1 street bike. 2 would be amazing but not an option, sadly. Also, none of the things that normally bother people about SuMo's bother me at all, (e.g. firm seat, small tank and I really like to do my own maintenance) but I do like the semi-sports riding position on the MV bikes, and the look and power... I think I'll wait to see what happens with the new MV's that are apparently coming out. The MV's felt like they had made a real effort, the 800 was really fun and has all the tech features you could ever want.

Having said that, the Husaberg is also such a good quality, complete, and over-engineered bike too. I'm not very attracted to spending huge money on some of these new bikes that have cheap finish and components, almost designed so that you need to spend more money 'upgrading" them straight off the shop floor...

So, yeah. I spent yesterday riding the FS and loving every second. It's still my favourite bike I've ever ridden, but maybe I am too biased...

What about the Husqvarna 701 that may come out looks cool and it's not orange.

Yeah, the 701 might be cool - the prototype looked pretty funky! I rode the SMC R 690 (and Duke) which I think is the same engine as the new 701... It was pretty heavy when compared to the 'Berg and the engine was also kinda sluggish by comparison... plenty of top end power though... not a bad bike, but not as "SuMo" as the Berg, so made me think I should be considering a Naked/Street bike instead...

With regards to MX engines, my KXF450 weighs only fraction less than my FS, but kicks and pulls a whole lot harder; but somehow that doesn't make it a better (more fun) bike to ride... (at least for a chump like me). The magic recipe of power delivery & handling seems to have manifest in a happy place, for me, that is the FS 570.

If we ever get 701's in NZ I'll try to score a test ride. I had to get an import FS from the USA, so they might not make it down here...

Ha ha... yip, the 650 does kick arse. If the 701 rides like the 690, that would be a shame... the 690 is pretty boring after riding the 650 & 570. Changing styles a bit, I took a MV 800 Dragster out in the weekend... Pretty cool! :p Still can't part with the 570 though, if only I had enough cash for both... Bitsa - you wanna catch up for a brew at Hallertau one of these weekends? I was at the track last weekend and it poured down for about 8 hours on and off... so sick of this weather :furious:
