Air filter installation

Hi All,

Here is a question about air filter installation on a 2011 FE-570. I was taught to install a bead of grease on the edge of the filter that seals against the air box. The owners manual does not instruct you to use grease. When the bike was new from the dealer it did not have a bead of grease on filter.
I also purchased No Toil air filter cleaner and air filter oil. It seems easy enough to use but does it work effectively?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

I have the same bike as you (a -12, but they are the same) and I always use notoil grease. When I take away the filter I can find dirt stuck in the grease, if it wasnt stuck there I guess the probability for it to get sucked into the engine is much higher.
I did the "air box modification" so its probably sucking in more **** than normally. Regardless, the grease do what its supposed to, and for sure its not doing anything bad!

I also use notoil oil and cleaner. I cannot honestly compare its effectiveness to any other filter oil, but I love how easy it is to clean the filters now! I do find particles in the cleaning water so it works, but to what degree compared to other products I dont know.

I too have a 2011 FE570, and the filter on mine came from the factory with a very modest amount of grease on the lip of the filter.

No Toil is good stuff.

Effectiveness - it's very sticky, so I have to figure it's as good as anything out there if the filter is coated properly. It's designed for filtration, so again...

Cleanup - easy

Follow the instructions. Don't forget to shake the oil up well. Might have to wash with gasoline the first time, to get that blue stock oil out.

They also make a grease, and I would advise liberal use. When your filter gets clogged, such as during a long dusty race, it will suck the edges in, and I don't know about on Husabergs, but a friend with a japanese bike ruined a top end because the filter got clogged and suction bypassed it.

I too use No Toil and it is good stuff but stay away from there newer green oil (biodegadable crap IMO) that is in a spray can, I have tried it and I do not think it works as well as their original red oil that comes in a bottle that that you pour on the filter and I always use the grease.

The green notoil comes in bottle too: [youtube:2n5sw8do]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9aU-LmlSkQ[/youtube:2n5sw8do]
I havent found the green notoil here in the nordic countries though, would like to try it.

I would highly recommend against using NotOil. Why? Because it is Not Oil. It will not block water like traditional filter oils which are very hydrophobic.

There are a bunch of other reasons as well, like it gets mouldy, dries out etc.

Don't believe me?

I had my airbox half full of water on the DRZ and it still ran. Still don't belive me? Try it yourself.
BTW, if you use Belray, no grease is needed.

Stay away. It is water soluable, this is bad if you ride anywhere with water.

My DNA air filter came with a small bottle of grease to use sealing the air filter edge. It's kinda clear with a hint of red color, feels like vaseline but is alot more slicker.

I'm soon out of it and wanna know what other stuff I can use. Vaseline might work but it's real pita to use it and don't know how it reacts with water and moisture.

There are products specifically for the purpose of sealing the edges of foam air filters. I got some at Cycle Gear.
