I< am planning to buy in a fews days a 05 650 fe in nice condittion with i think 1000km, The guy bought in 2008 brand new, What sould i check mainly, There seem to be a lot of oil dripping from the airbox and he reroure a hose into some kind of plastic container!!! Otherwise it start ok and once warm have a good idlle,

I mainly ride in fast wood area and power line,,,is this a good choice for a veteran like me with 35 years riding dirt bike, I just sold wy yam wr 400 and wanted more torque down lo. I am also considering a nice 06 ktm 525 exc.

Thank you for the advises

I personally like the Husaberg better than the KTM and I have owned both. The oil from the airbox issue has me a bit puzzled as the bike does not have an airbox as such. There is a hose that runs from the head to the top frame tube for the breather (which I guess you could refer to as the airbox) and it will dump oil into the frame tube if the oil level in the motor is too high (think over-filled), but a tube draining into a plastic container I don't understand. The 650 will have more power than the KTM 525 but should feel lighter when riding it.

Well,i supposed to get a second look at the bike on monday and problably buy it. As soon as i ll get it i will order a Rekluse Z start Pro in order to tame that monster a bit and get a smoother powerband. I think it will be a perfect match for trail riding.

As gas consumption goes is it like other dirt four strokes or terrible,,,the guy also has a big thank that i could install if i need it!!! i think around 22 or 23l. Should i feel safe about reliability

please anyone ......should i buy this bike...is it rideable in the trails or too big(motor)

I had an '05 FE650E and the only place I rode it was in the woods. Logging roads, two track, single track--it did it all just fine. It was even happy to thump along just above idle in tight trails. I sold it and have regretted it since.
I am now in the process of buying an '02 FC550 that has been set up for off-road use.

I would not hesitate to buy the bike. The 650 revs up a bit slower than does the 550 (which I currently own and love in the woods - enough so that I sold my KTM 200XC-W) and pulls like a big tractor in the lower rpm range. I personally like the 550/650 motor much better in the woods than the old 501 motor (owned a '96 FE501 and rode it for years). BTW, I once owned a '02 FE650 and the '05 models are much nicer bikes.

I have two 2005 FE650s. They are very reliable bikes and have been almost problem free except a broken
3rd gear at 117 hrs on one of them.
I've got 160hrs on one and 70hrs on the other.
They can make a very good woods bike with the right gearing. For me the 15/48 is the best for all around use.
I tried going shorter but with this bike it's not as smooth and will feel as though winding out.
So with the amount of power these bikes make you can be very affective in woods and even tight single track if
you can adjust your riding style to use all the torque and tractoring to your advantage.
Other than that, I believe the experienced off road rider appreciates the 650 the most and can use it affectively
in all conditions.

Thank you guys, i was just wondering what kind of gearing this bike need ,cause there is a 45 in the back and for my first ride i find it a bit fast for my taste...also i will have to play with the carb, cause it is hard to start ,very fast on the choke and died if i close it , and after i finally drive away it backfire a lot

the thing about that big 1 inch hose coming from under the tank and going all the to the back of the frame and looping under the rear fender and finishing in a plastic bottle!!!!mickey mouse set-up

Backfire usually means it's running lean, so for starters you could try and turning the fuel screw out 1/8 to
1/4 turn and see if it helps.
I'm no jetting expert so you may need to get some other advice with the choke problem.
The bike came stock with 15/45 gearing. It's too tall for most trails.
Switch the 45 for a 48 and you will probably be much happier.

My bike came with 15/45 and it was too fast. 13T countershaft sprocket works fine for me, i left the 45 on. If you're ready for chain and sprockets anyway, you might try 14/52 or 13/48, look around UHE awhile and you'll find lots of suggestions.

This is good, too. http://www.gearingcommander.com/

I had to go to a 60 pilot jet to get easy startups and I also bought a idle jet that has the external knob so you can easily adjust it with just your fingers. I still get a few pops on decel on a cool day when it's not warmed up yet.

what about the thermostat, should i remove it.And what amount of oil goes in there.

I didn't remove my thermostat. I did install a factory fan kit, and used the BMW thermal switch in the bottom of the radiator - works perfectly.

Oil - you might have to experiment. I never seem to get the right amount. I put in 800 - 900 ml first, then add a little as needed according to the sight glass.

there is a 14 teeth on the bike already,so i ordered a 48 for the back. About the fan kit, where do i ordered it and you sure there is enough space between the rad and the tank. Will a Spal 4 in. fit.
Stupid question ,where is the oil filter!!!

i ordered a small led tail light and a new air filter andi remove all the flashers. What is the correct width for the bar.

I know there is a lot of questions but i want to be ready for the week-end! :D

Gearing is a personal thing of course. The 14/45 was 3.21 the same as I like with the 15/48 at 3.2.
I did try going lower at 14/47 which was 3.35 at it was too short. For real tight single track it was ok but
on a fire road or getting up to speed there was too much shifting, engine braking and wasn't the smooth ride
I wanted.
For a new 570 its a different story. They ride nice a little shorter.
I have no problem running the 15/48 in first and second on tight trails. And you always have the clutch to slow you down if needed.
The oil filter is on the right side, upper right from the primary drive gear.
Pro Taper/Renthal sell many bar dimensions. I believe they are all around 800 to 803mm width
It came with a Megura which I believe is just a little wider

when you start the bike do you use the decompression lever while starting it,cause it seem to start better without it!!

When i pull the lever while starting the ebutton it just roll without firing

The decompression lever is only used for kick starting, when you do need to kick it you pump the kick starter till it goes hard (piston is at TDC) then pull the decomp and pump it slightly to get it past it. This makes the bike alot easier to kick as it moves the length of the stroke with less resistance
