I am fighting with hard starting problems on my 1995 FC 501.

I now have an ignition that will throw big lightening bolts (ie 0.37 inches reliably) so my problem must reside in the fuel / air system.

I have a Dellorto VHSB 38MM carb.

I have read that small bits of crud can cause my problem, therefore I will clean the carb.

I also have a sticking float that occasionaly runs fuel out the overflow when the engine is off hence I think I may need a new float and float fuel valve.

Questions??

Was this carb ever a good solid reliable design?

Has it always been problematic? I have heard terms like very touchy.

Can it be brought back to "New" condition?

If it is completely rebuilt to New condition, what should I expect in terms of starting and reliability?

Where can I buy a carb rebuild kit?

Who can do a good job on the rebuild if I choose to have some else do it?

Should I replace the carb with a different unit?

What is the best carb I could put on this bike for reliability and ease of starting...not top end HP??

The Dellorto should be O.K. if it is in good condition (not worn). High wear items are the float needle and seat and the slide needle. If the slide bore is worn you will need a new carb.

Download the hard start guide and make sure your valves are properly adjusted before you do anything else. If the valves are too tight you will not be able to kick start it.

The carb can be sent to Dale Lineaweaver for modification. Many claim his mods to the Dell are worthwhile.

Hi WAberg
On my 98 600 with Dellorto VHSB40MM, it really made big change to to replace all consumable and clean all jets, but the real change in starting the bike was when I fine tuned the camshaft. Then the bike came really easy to start.
Were to get the dellorto overhaul kit should be your nearest dealer, were ever you are?

Someone will be here shortly and go through it for you in details.

Not knowing where your located makes it harder for us to tell where to get work done.

I am in Seattle, Cycleworks in Renton is the nearest Husaberg dealer.

I do not understand tuning the camshaft.

Hi WAberg
Did you check this thred out? Do you need any further information about fine tuning a camshaft?
The main reason for easier start is the internal de-com on the camshaft will work closer to its designed purpose when camshaft has been fine tuned.

Thor
