like a venus flytrap!

where do you hook the spring?

do you/can you preload the spring?

so you pull the idler gear off first?

what angle the kickstart decomp arm?

cheers!

Come on Taff!!! In all your wisdom, you are being duped by the KICKSTART mechanism?!?!

Ditto, if I weren't so stupified I'd have a wisecrack for you. I don't remember it well enough to answer your q's, but I remember having the initial 'huh' when I put my first one back together. It turned out way simpler that I thought.

remember KISS!!

sorry I couldn't have been MORE help, but in the infamous words of Mr Know It All, you should have known.

If I remember one end goes on the thingabob and the other hooks to the dohicky and then you gotta hold your tounge just right to get the whacamacallit lined up just right and then badda bing badda boom your done.
Really Taffy I think your mugging me with this one. 8O

the reason i ask is because i thought my mechanism was fine, you know very, very good ol' boy!

alas i pull the mechanism to bits and the kickstart has been beating up a piece of crescent shaped plate that is screwed to the cases. scrapes down the side, dinks in the end etc!

one of the screws was loose and dinked over a tad.

i've noticed that when i had the kickstart on-one spline to the left of normal i used to get 'lock-up' (at the top) so i guess that was the time it happened?

so, yes i do know how to put it together but am concerned how i got this...

regards

Hey Taff, the spring can only go one place, put it into the kickstart shaft first then wiggle into the opening in the casing that it hooks into, once hooked pull kickstart out a bit so it just clears cresent shaped doofah and, -with kickstart on is easier- wind it clockwise till the return stop on the shaft clears lug. then push it in and remove kickstart CAREFULLY without pulling shaft out again! then put the keyhole shaped engagey widget in with the spring - should be at about 7 - 8 o'clock ish, then the idler gear, will have to compress spring on engager to put gear on. should be a gooden, when i built the 550 i had to put a thin washer behind the decompessor arm to help the engine end of it onto the return ramp but mine had never worked when i bought the bike as some cowboy had built the engine last time so yours should be fine. Good luck 'ole boy and wear safety glasses! Jared

cheers jared

you've just given me an idea!

i will check the sidethrust on the shaft-may even find i have a shim/washer missing. i ran the bike for 24 months without the kickstart fitted and although i put it all in a bag at the time, the bag got moved 100 times

we'll see!

thanks again!

Correct placement of widgets and whirl’ers are paramount! I found assembling this mechanism to be a real challenge! I installed the whole assembly at one time. (Shaft, engagement dog and gear) with the return spring pre- tensioned, be careful to keep the unit pushed in to the case as it will release return spring tension. Then I'll install the clutch assemble. You need to be careful with the engagement dog as if I remember correctly it needs to sit on top of the crescent shape piece of metal. On my 470 both the crescent piece of metal and my decompression dog were both severely detierated.

Likewise on my 650. The crescent piece of metal "ENGAGEMENT SLEDGE" replacement part I purchased was a slightly modified piece compared to the original one. Slightly thicker and bigger stop section. Husaberg obviously had the same damage issues as we have encountered

The curved piece screwed to the case not only operates the decompressor, but also the thin end of it stops the kickstarter on the return stroke. If the kickstarter slips off your foot on an engine kickback, it is a bit rough on the plate. Is a bugger to keep the kickstarter from wobbling and slipping over that thin section when you are positioning the clutch cover. If it happens and you tighten the clutch cover down tends to biff the plate a bit as well.

From what I have seen ,it is normal for that engagement sledge (cresent piece)to show alot of wear. I have seen a few and all had score marks and wear on them.

well i took jared's advice and after several 'misunderstandings' it dawned on me!

i layed the bike on it's side and first of all i ignored the parts book diagram which shows the spring the wrong way round.

i put the spring on the unit first and then fed it in the hole, i put the baby spring for the ratchet in it's hole also. then i put the kickstart on and wound it around, it slid in deeper and as the recess for the ratchet went past the hump on the crescent i held it there and then fitted the ratchet 'keyhole thingy' and started to release the coil of the spring. the crescent 'hump' stopped it going any further anti-clockwise AND it also squeezed the keyhole inwards and up so that the gear went straight on.

i then took it around further using the kickstart clockwise and it works perfectly now.

i have also put a .010" shim in the sidecover.

thanks all and if any of you followed how i did it this time and feel it along with jared's help works then let us all know here!

Taffy you READ THE BOOK??? Whats up with that? I was sure you had your MAN CARD. Books and directions ....we don't need no stinkin books!
Any way you have redeemed yourself in my eyes. I was worried you couldn't put the kicker on by yourself.

Taffy,
I hope you took many pictures and posted them to the "owners doc.".

I remember having troubles fitting the kickstart assembly and it only got worse with each cooly I sipped! My neighbor who works on trains for a living helped me get it sorted if you can believe that.
