adjusting timing with a dial back timing light?

Looking thru the inspection hole in the timing cover if I move the mark on the stator to the right does this advance or ****** the timing? What causes the timing marks on the flywheel to jump around when checking the timing at idle?

PM JoeUSA as he uses a dial back timing light and is always very helpful.

Cheers,
Simon

Thanks Simon, yes I am using a digital inductive dial back timing light.Taffy not looking for a mechanic at this time, just looking for some advise from this great web site. thanks, pete

Hi Pete,

The only reason I can think of to why it should jump around on idle is bacause of the low rpm, a spark is produced every revolution but only fires every 4th, so it could be the fact of a slight difference in crank speed, there is three rotations where the engine is not firing. just a guess.
When I run them up on the test rig the spark is rock solid from when they spark up, 250 to 300 rpm with my rewound units.

Sparks.

Hello mrk3cobra,

To answer your question, it ******* the timing. And as Sparks states the Berg ignition fires the plug every 360 degrees of flywheel rotation, just like on a 2 stroke. At idle there is a slight difference in flywheel rotation speed when firing on compression ( valves closed) and firing on overlap (valves open). IMHO this difference is sensed by the ignition trigger circuit which in turn changes the time of the firing pulse. Your timing light is actually firing at 2 different rpms.

Joe

the engine slows dramaticaqlly from the moment the exhaust valve starts to open and the combustion pressure on the piston stops. the engine then has another 240d to fo to TDC again and by then it's telling the ignition curve to be in a different place.

shame that it doesn't have a damper....

reckon that a few years ago someone could have had a nice little earner if they had done an ignition curve and a coil seperately and still used the same 6 coil wires....

regards

Taffy
