I have a 2004 fe450 which i bought with 830 km on it Lost some coolant this weekend , not sure what is in it. Bike has 1050km on it now I bought Motul Motocool , should I dump and start fresh or just add to it

Thanks

Frank

a few possibilities:
engine runs too hot: boils and evaporates water or radiator cover leaks (clean rubber) or
there is a leak: check seals and especially water hoses and hose tightener rings
if its difficult to find: clean engine, use pure blue coolant and warm up, park on a newspaper and search...

or: a blown headgasket...

good luck

Sorry, Coolant came out the overflow hose on to the ground from overheating I am going to put a recovery bottle on it.

Do I add to existing coollant or start new I do not know what coolant is in it now

i wouldn't get too carried away with trying to solve a problem you may not have. how much coolant did you lose? and what type of riding was going on? how much clutching were you doing? all watercooled dirtbikes blow out coolant occasionally.
top it off with something of the same color mixed with distilled water and see if it happens again.

Being a 2004, I'd flush the coolant now and start fresh. Could be the original coolant in it, I change my coolant every year as pre season maintenance. I just picked up an 08 in January with 3.4 hrs, has 5.5 hrs on it now, at the end of the season I'll change out all fluids including coolant/brake fluid/fork oil etc. I'd have more hours on it but it keeps snowing :( ...should get her out for a good ride this weekend, supose to be nice :D

You should never lose coolant with a mechanically sound engine! If you do your doing something wrong and losing power the only time this is out of you control is in middle of a race and the rads get covered in mud. The amount of people i see sitting on the starting gate with coolant pissing out of the over flow is unreal there bike is over heating and they about to blast off the line.

Hey Frank,
As M357.5 said. Drain and refill the coolant with fresh stuff. Be sure to bleed the cooling system with the bleed screw on the cylinder head. Treat it to a new radiator cap while you are at it.
Fill the radiator about 10mm over the core to leave room for expansion. Do not fill it all the way to the top.
Also, check the nipple that goes into the radiator that attaches to the overflow hose. make sure you have no leaks there when you are done (after it is up to operating temp).

What Berger says, but I like to almost fill them and then they find their own level. If you had it full, it will blow some out as they need air space in the top of the rad without an overflow bottle, this is normal.

And coolant should be changed every 2 years. It'll still keep it cool, but the corrosion inhibiors go of after a while, a bit like brake fluid I'm told, so a regular change keeps the insides clean and not corroding. Use dstilled water, or fresh clean rainwater.

Thanks guys rdering a 18bar cap, I will change out the fluid We were doing real tight snigle track 60 degree day, Slipping clutch ,waiting for people Guess you got to keep them moving or shut them off. The coolant on a xr650r as boiling in recovery tank

Also looking at putting on a cooling fan

Hey Frank,

I had the same thing a few times after gnarly hill climbs or if I do lots of tight technical riding. I use 2nd gear and a fair bit of clutch and it happened twice in a year and a half. However I do have the Vapour warning light to tell me it's getting warm. I just shut off when stopped for more than 30 secs and it mostly stays cool.

btw Order a 18 bar cap for me too if you've not done it yet.

I will order an extra one for you Steve

I dumped the coolant and got 550ml out of it.

Update : I put on 18 bar rad cap, new motul motocool with a ounce of water wetter No more overheating problems so far. I have blead the system at lease 7 times and got air out of it. I also try not to slip the clutch as much and shut it down if stopped

bleed

Hi,

Sorry for interfering, but surely it's not 18 Bar...... Maybe 1.8 Bar or 18 PSI ???

Anders DK

ofcourse you know hat you have to open the bleed bolt at the cilinder head when refilling...

ofcourse

RE: bleed

So do you guys think its OK to put in some distilled water till I change the coolent with something I can get localy. Its got what ever it come with and I laid it down again. There is only a honda place close by. I think I should put some thing in there. It didn't over heat but it low. What about well water ?
I blew it on a lava rock switch back today. It was just about up side down for a couple minets. I think I need to use some carb cleaner too and clean the air filter. It wasn't the same on the way home, I think I should check the valves too. It kind of lost some power. There was a deep river crossing to but the filter didn't seem wet.

RE: bleed

also, does any one know what carb intake insert would fit a 2006 FE550. the Power Now ones I can find only list 2004's
