Hi Bergers,
Just thought I'd let you know about recent stator woes on my 98 FE501.
Back in October 06, the second stator in my FE501 started to fail after about 250 hrs, the usual cutting out when hot, and would go again when cooled down a bit. As a new one no longer seemed to be available a rewind job was required.
I picked the best looking one that I had, ie the least corrosion, and dropped it off to Small Coil Rewinds in Geelong. as I happenned to be going past on my way to Tasmania. These guys have been doing bike electricals for a long, long time and seemed to have about 6 people working there doing electrical stuff for bikes.
When I got home from Tasmania in November, the stator was home waiting for me in the mail which was great.
Reassembled, checked the timiing, started easily enough and away we go for another few hundred hours. A few weeks later the lighting failed, so I had to remove again and send it off to fix the lighting coils too. Done under warranty. Unlucky I guess, anyway back on by mid December and all's good again.
I got my 650 for Christmas, so it hasn't had a lot of work in 2007, about 20 hrs, mostly ridden by a good mate. When I had hopped on it, I thought it had felt a bit flat off the bottom, and that the initial throttle response wasn't what it was, but then I'd been on my 650 and everything feels flat and unresponsive by comparison anyway!
On a ride down near Nowra in November 07, once again being ridden a mate, it did the SEM thing and stopped sparking when hot. I rode it out with a couple of cooling cycles and when I got home contacted sparks from this site. So about 20 hours on a SCR rewind and $300. Disappointing!
I packed up the original, unrewound stator and shipped it off to sparks in Spain. He had it in a week and did his thing. I got it back in the mail last Monday and I got around to fitting it on Saturday morning. Guessed the timing, as the timing hole was bogged up with a rivet and epoxy stuff. Ah well, it shouldn't be too far off I thought and checked for spark. There was a nice healthy one, so finished I reassembly.
Started from cold 5th kick after having sat there for 5 weeks and sounded good. So a quick test ride and systems check and guess what, the throttle response was there.
It got about 5 hours on it over the weekend and its running great, and generally starting 1st kick when hot, so hopefully a happy ending. 206 euros, or about $350 Oz.
So thanks sparks for the the great job and service.
Merry Christmas
Steve
