A luddite's adventure in rebuilding . . .

So, after waiting over a year for my rebuild to come back, I finally received my bike. Happy? Well, in a way I became very happy. But I sure didn't start out that way.

It started with a serious oil leak spraying out of the back of the left case cover. Immediately shut her down to investigate (I had a pic somewhere, but I can't find it). A quick check and I discovered 2 case cover bolts missing and it appeared as though the gasket was folded over at the front of the case (no gasket around the rear).

I opened her up to put in a new gasket and after removing sludge (and I have no idea how a new motor ends up with sludge at the bottom of the case), I discovered this:

Yep, that's a cam chain master link. Oh no! So, off with the head to rotate the motor and triple check the cam chain:

All the links are there, may as well install Taffy's decomp spring. However, while rotating the engine, I discovered this was only HAND-TIGHT!

So, I'm a bit upset. I have to go through this whole motor. Nope, can't trust anything this guy did at this point. I LOVED IT! Despite throwing away good money on a slack job, I was basically forced to do something that I really enjoyed doing!
Had to fix bodged up kick starter

Mmmmm, new goodies:

may as well do a crankcase breather (Thanks Bushie!):

Nothing like having the right tool for the right job. Too bad I didn't :(. Still, the impact wrench and a towel worked, even if it scared the crap outta me.

Buttoned up again after checking everything I could. That plumbing looks terrible . . . time to fix that too

Time to clean up this rat's nest of a wiring job

Installed Taffy's starter, a bunch of other crap that I didn't stop to take pics of.

a video of first start (I hope):

I really like the Renazco on the Sumo. Not sure whether I'd drop the hefty coin on a trail rider but it's much better than the stock suppository. Man, the original plank was brutal for any rider longer than 20 minutes. The Renazco makes it much more tolerable.

Atless u know wats good now & peace of mind wif nice miles , enjoyable ride
