99 fx501 starter problem

Well I picked up a 99 fx501 recently. Trying to start it is a *****. When you click the start button you just get a lot of clanking. I just want to know what I should look at. Id guess starter gear maybe?

After reading a few other threads I am going to take a wild guess and say maybe autodecomp? Seems to be common.

you don't want to be touching that starter button no matter what till you have it starting easy enough by foot. yes the auto decomp is critical.

new camchain
later auto decomp modifed and sent to you from me
check for tuliped valves
check for cupped tappet pads
worn out rocker arm shafts
get an iridium plug
get a kickstart sledge mod from me
you want to go right through the carb with fresh jets etc. spending a lot here but could be worth it.
set the ignition timing as per the doc.

when you've done all the above and got it starting and running with the carb running sweetly, THEN try the button....!

regards

Taffy

I gotta say the bike ran fine very smooth even. Just starting it is a problem. There is no manual decomp ether so kicking is just as bars as the button. I should say it's not stock. It has a 600cc conversion.

When i get home tonight i will look at the bike more and give you all the info i can as i haven't really dug into it much.

If it works fine with the kick starter I think you have to look at the starter. I would pull it out and bench test it. Put it a vice and operate it with a set of jumper cables to 12V. If the starter works fine (and it probably will), you may be looking at a starter sprag concern (in the cases). The cases will need to be split. The pre 2000 bikes were known to have the spags fail and cause catastrophic damage (broken cases and metal contamination throughout). Having the sprag grenade is not something you want any part of.

It doesn't kick fine. It is extremely hard to kick. And i am no stranger to a left side kick. I have owned a few KTM lc4's lol. I can barely kick this over :(

You may pull the starter anyways and give it a try. Easy enough and nothing to loose.

And how can we rule out the sprag concerns? I should throw it out there also, I got this bike as a backup for trackdays this year, so not looking to dump a ton into it.

We can't. But with the starter out you may be able to see something or perhaps hear something coming from that area.
You may try cranking it over with the spark plug out. Just to see if the noise goes away. It may give you some insight as to which way to go.
It's hard to own one of these bike's without dumping a ton into them. They make nice projects, and are very rewarding when they work properly. Unfortunately cheap and inexpensive are words seldom used when dealing with Husaberg's.

you need to start looking at the auto decomp on it, look for tuliped inlets, look at sprucing up the carb but most of all don't ask a hundered questions worth a hundred quid and then say i'm not spending money on it. oh and then it's also (poor phuqin bike!) got to be a track day bike and drag your lardy arse around with no money spent on t.

it's 600cc of performance engine for chrissakes! it's nearly 15 years old! and it's not a 125?

I don't know which to feel most sorry for? an arab working donkey fed on a handful of grass per century or that bloody husaberg.

get real!

Don't take it the wrong way but yes its the backup bike... I already have more than i can account for in my other bike. And at this point in the season i don't have the extra cash to go around. I just spent 90% of it building my other bike. This bike was extremely well setup as is. But i didnt take into account the fact that it may have some other problems. Unfortunately if it needs a lot it will sit until next year. Its all about $$ i have to spend at this point. So at least i am being honest with you.

It will be fixed at some point but It may wait a while.

fer the sake of compromise, just learn how to start it with the kicker. it prolly doesn't have a bar mounted comp release, but maybe a kickstart cable? i don't think my 98 fe600e had either. but with a bar mount, it's easy to get it just past tdc and then kicking is feasable. you should be able to fab one using an oem cable and aftermarket lever.

Alright so tonight I tear into. We will see what's up with the auto decomp And just forget about the magic button. And once again I didn't mean to ruffle some feathers. I understand it take money to get the results. I plan on keeping this bike around I got a great deal on it so if I don have the cash now I will do it later.

personally, i wouldn't bother with the auto decomp if you're not using the estart. install a manual.

Well we did finally get it started using the kick start. My friend thought he broke his ankle when that thing kicked back lol. Should of had on his riding boots. It defiantly needs some tweaking carb wise. It has a ****** big gun exhaust so it was to loud to mess with at this hour.
