Hey, Berg Owners,

my friend has a 99' FE501 Berg and has a big problem - the bike seems to be dead...
The thing is, that he was runing on his bike and it switched off. After that there was no chance to make it work from the kickstarter - only by pulling the bike with the car. However the bike didnt work as it should. Went it the rpm reached the idling speed, the bike turend off always.. We checked everything - starting from carburator, wiring, flywheel and etc. As I have a 2000 fe501, it was very easy to test - we changed the parts and tried kickstarting again. After changing almost everything, he measured the valve clearance - it was OK.

So, what would be the thoughts? what to do now?

RE: 99

do the check on the SEM ignition. all the numbers are in the doc under electrical. try the cheaper stuff first like a plug and the cap.

if the tappets are good then i wouldn't think it's follower or valve spring trouble?

regards

Taffy

RE: 99

Check what Taffy says, it is good place to start. my '99 501 is hard to start when rings are going. so try compression test. could be a valve not sitting correctly but doubt it. I assume you have already checked the timing.

RE: 99

if the sem values ck out ok, i'd pull the cam cover and take a critical look at the cam bearings. if they start to come apart, your valve clearances will be ok when ck'd w/o the engine running, but go away as the engine turns, effectively stealing your compression on start. spinning it up by pullstarting or bumpstarting will be the only way to start it until the bearing gives it up altogether

RE: 99

Thanks for replies, after reading them I again think positive about finding the problem, cuz after a week with no changes on that bike, i felt like being trapped... So again going to garage and hpoing to start the bike :)
