I've just watched the White Star 1999 World 500 MX Review.
I had heard that Joel Smets bike broke in '99, but I didn't realize how many times.
It had to be frustrating to lead that many races and the last 10 minutes, the bike
starts stuttering.
Does anybody know what really happened to it?
What problems were going on? It seemed like they could never figure it out the
whole season no matter what they worked on.
He won the championship in '95, '97 & '98 with very little mechanical problems.
Thanks, Husaberg Chuck

I understand it was a heat problem that caused the electrics to go astray. The heat was probably due to the motor being a bit bigger than the 600 cc and Joel being one of the few people to be able to work an open class bike.

I think it was why the new motor had the cases splitting the way they do and it allows the water jacket to be higher up around the motor and also a new water pump to have the water move quicker. Heat i think causes most of the berg problems....causes weep hole leaks, the old ignitions to stuff up etc etc. Thinking of how hot the motor is getting when you are fighting in tight and slow stuff is part of the game with a light weight motor....perhaps.

I think he would have won the championship in that year if not for the break downs.

I was shocked at his speed in the final moto of the six day enduro on the 450 suzook.
