Bergers,
I have a quandry. I've been battling with my poor 98 for some time now. After the roller gave a while back, it's been a chain reaction. Then the tappet locknut after I adjust valves improperly, broke free and chewed the timing chain, which then snapped and link pieces gouged the main crank bearing seal. Then over time (since i didn't know that had happened) there were some bits of metal that worked into the main crank bearing. Then i heard the big grinding noise and the bearing started squealing. I cracked the case and found the mountains of metal shavings. The bearings never escaped the cartridge, so that's good, but metal was EVERYWHERE. I have a 'spare' 96 fe501 kick-start motor and a 97 fc501 e-start motor. (this is what I was told in the trade) i'm now looking at two options.
1. Get/borrow a blind bearing puller to finish a total bearing swap.
2. take my good head and put it on the 97 e-start and cut the 98 frame and modify to receive the extra long e-start motor.
Should i be really worried about taking bearings out of a 96 to put in my 98? They are all the same specs. In fact the replacements are all skf and the stockers in the 98 are kbc.
any thoughts?
