I just bought a 98 FE400E today and am looking for any advice as far as service goes before I ride it much. It has a Baja Designs kit on it and will be plated for street use. I bought it mostly for trail use and am concerned a bit about using up service hours on the street given some of the things I've read about cam rocker life etc, any opinions? Also, it has a cheesy mechanical speedometer/odometer set-up right now, are there any affordable electronic options for a speedo and tach?

Great website and thanks!

hello roger and welcome to UHE.

go into downloads and look for three manuals. parts, service and workshop. you'll even see books on shocks and forks etc.

where you are in that cycle will be difficult to tell. there are several riders here with your age of machine that will tell you of the 'weakest link and if that's good then you can keep riding. at the base of this post there is an owners doc you can download for the model after yours. they have quite a bit in common but ARE different still.

trailtech is considered a great cheapish alternative but in truth that is posh spending to some! if you travel the gallery you'll see that plenty fit a bicycle speedo on from wal mart and it costs all of $5.

Hello Roger,

and be welcome here.
From my experiences, the 98 models were really unsusceptible.
The e-start engine is nearly the same as the kickstart version. Only
crankshaft, crankshaft bearings and the additionally mounted counterbalancer shaft, gearwheels and electric motor are different to the kickstart version.

The only thing that´s not so fine is, when your freewheel or clutchmechanism gets damaged you have to split the cases. That means a bit more work than at newer engines (post 2001).

About your rockerarms and rockerarmroller I can say that they are by far more reiliable than in engines post 1999 which got the conical and stronger valve springs .
