Im looking at a very low hour 1998 501fc for a good price. Ive read alot about reliability of these bikes and it seems to be that 97 and up are generally reliable with proper maintenance. I love the idea of this bike im coming from an xr400 and im looking for something just as luggable but with more balls, a little lighter, and with a better suspension. I know this is a motocross model but i do mostly trail riding with a little motocross. With revalving and sprockets will this bike be as good as a fe501 in the woods? Also whats the advantage of the 2000 and newer frame?anything else i should know about these bikes in terms of what ill be using it for?

Thanks

Hello.
The 2000 and newer model are higher than the older type of chassi.
Change oil often and don`t rev it to hard, it`s a old machine.
Change rockerarm rollers and camshaft bearings, camchain.
It`s a nice bike for riding in the woods and very reliable if you take care of it.

By higher do you mean taller? Also should rocker arm rollers, cam bearings, and chain as soon as i get it or on a regular basis?

Yes, i mean taller.
150-200 h on the bearings depending of your riding style = rev.
If you are going to keep the bike and don`t know when they was changed, change them in case of.....
