I'm a Fairly new 'berg owner, with a 97 FE501. The bike i got came from southern California, Jetted for Sea level, i believe. I live at 4000 feet, and ride up to 6000+ feet. My bike is very rich. No real starting issues, But even on Cold (30f) days, i can start it and pretty much turn the choke off right away. Its got a good bit of black fuel smoke, and i can smell it at idle, as well. It feels to me like its maybe down on power from what ive heard, But was told its been rebuilt. I want to get jetting right first. When i ride down to 2500 feet, it runs better, gets a bit crisper. I like to have sugestions, i dont even know what stock jetting was, and have not experiance jetting this bike, only old mikunis on jap bikes. I know therse many variables, but any help that might get me close would be great. I'll try and get all the numbers as it sits now this weekend. I own no jetting parts, so i want to make sure if i get stuff, i get stuff in hopefully a close range. Any help would be great!

RE:

HBJ

you need to get a new atomiser tube and a new needle. they are always wearing out.

we have many jetting recommendations in the doc. for your altitude you need 10 less on the MJ and a corresponding test of the needle. however, 10 down on the MJ and the needle to stay still would be my best guess.

Here is the jetting as is sits:
Needle is K51, snap-ring bottom groove
Needle Jet is 268
Slide is 40
Main Jet is 188
Pilot is 33
Start jet is 45

I have the stock jettings for a 2002 FE501e in my dads manual. I dont know how close those are, but i assume they would be similar. In comparison to that, my needle and main jet are changed from stock. Would the 2002 501 jetting be the same at my 97?
What im trying to work out: I know its rich at idle an mid range, and runs much better as i go down in elevation. I'd like to get it a bit crisper. Top end, it pretty much doesent pull very hard above about 3/4 throttle up. MY buddies kdx200 out pulls it top end. So i may even be too lean on the top end, and to rich on the bottom. If thats possible.
I will look into replacing the needle and needle jet, I just need to get an idea of what to get.

Also, note, when i pulled the carb, i had fuel sitting in the air box side intake boot. Bike hasent been on its side or upside down.

why don't you check the condition of the parts mentioned initially. it's a risk, one worth taking but i would go for the DR272 since heimar and joe recommend them. new needle if yours is getting a bit shot blast. check all your jets are clear and then see how it goes. maybe even do the drill mod that joe recommends?

get on with it.

The symptoms are quite familiar as such is what prompted my carburetor modifications.

Upside:
Using flow bench data from each carburetor I can correctly modify internal passages and provide correct settings.

Downside:
You can expect to spend close to $200.00, must send me the complete carburetor and will not experience the satisfaction of tuning it yourself.

For The record:
If I had a "universal" kit and / or solid specifications this service would not even be mentioned. I have run like carburetors on the same engine and most often end up with entirely different settings.

Dale

Maybe in the future, but i cant really afford it right now. I just want to get the jetting close. I dont race, only ride for fun. Just want it a bit more crisper, and see if i can get it to pull better up top.

Use the DOC and follow the advice of those on this site. Between the two you should do fine.

As I have mentioned before I can't in good faith give specifics regarding the Delortto as all my carburetors are tuned with main body modifications and such would only confuse the issue.

Example, I use Keihin main jets most often in the #170 range. 8O

Ok, well, i found a major part of my problem, as posted elsewhere, my cam was a tooth advanced. Not that thats sorted out, the bike make way more power. pulls faster and way better. I havent had a chance to do a plug check, but what ive noticed now, since fixing the cam timing, and a new plug and cleaned carb, It will not start with the choke on. 40*f day, been sitting all night, starts first kick with the choke off. wont start at all with it on. Aside from that, the jetting doestn seem way off, but i wont know for sure ontill i ride it some more.
