97 501 timing chain

While I have it tore down this far is it good to replace the timing chain and cam gear? And what are some good resources for finding such parts or cross overs to something else that will work in it.

I have a 2005 fs with a 97 501 motor.

You can use the steel timing gear 80036011100 from a 04-08 model. Taffmeisters has a timing chain.

I used the above and a 07 KTM RFS cam in my 97 600. I had to flip over the cam sprocket to get correct timing chain alignment as the KTM cam was slightly longer where the sprocket attaches. It has worked out very nicely.

By using the KTM cam you get a perfect fit when using the updated 04-08 autodecompression device.

The KTM cam is not as radical as the Husaberg one. Held side by side the Berg cam has a very steep ramp up. The KTM cam should be much easier on the valve train and gives a smoother power delievery.

yup, can't disagree with any of that! except to say, if you look at all the KTM cam codes, you'll see the cam profile is in the part code if you are looking for it. one cam has '53' in it. one cam has '01' in it. i think there's a 5521 cam. I guess the bitch would be the 400SX or 450SX cams. they'll rip!

I can get virtually everything for that old motor fella but please ask first because Like eric above, you can see that you need to buy the best that fits and not just 'what fits'.

Hey Taffy like you said bestfitting so from your website which camshaft Sprocket would be the best fit?
80036011100. Camshaft sprocket. 04-08
200 158 01. Camshaft sprocket. 96-02
And for the timing chain which one would be the bestfit? S as i saw a few and not sure which ones would be options.
Thanks

the old 501 will be an 80. the 5600 is an 82 and the lil 400 is a 78. so 80 for you. the sprockets are the same part it's just that I've asked Julia to keep 'H' numbers divided from KTM "11-digit" if we can. we took all the effort to work out the continuety between H and KTM and then tell everyone in the same listing. I was always against this but I should have just shouted Bastard at my staff and made them listen about 7 years ago.

I said things like: it's not a good idea....
I really think we ought to....

but they carried on and put all the years and part numbers in together.

I'm pretty sure people like phuqface in Australia would go on there just to cross -reference something and then visit Munn.

fair does...you get the cheapest deal you can - where you can but by return, I now have to split the 'H' off from the katoom numbers and leave y'all guessing.

as Alice might sing in his Nevada home: "no more Mr Nice Guy!"

believe it or not, eric, it's legit now. oldtown cottonwood has gone "sedona"

I want to slow things down. It appears then that Old Town Cottonwood may just be a little too jumpin for me. The 10/12 Lounge in Clarkdale may be just about the right speed. Force Ride 10 could be renting the caboose of the Verde Valley Train, having one too many and lying about how fast I used to be able to ride. I digress, unfortunately I have more than a couple years before I can get out of CA. Oh well back to Realtor.com. Gotta be prepared and find just the right place when its time to go. Prescott ("The Dells" perhaps), Cottonwood or Clarkdale. Decisions decisions.

One of these days I'll buy you a cold Arizona Trail Ale (or whatever you like) at the 10/12 :eek:ccasion5::eek:ccasion5:
