gday, great site fellas
im the recent new owner of 96fe501 purchased cheap and not running......
risk i know but had a good feeling about it and it just looked quick with exotic componentry i had to have it. Got it running now with info from here, idle still not smooth, might have something to do with bent needle. I've adjusted valves, blue spark, cleaned carb, cleared blocked idle jet, cleaned air filter and fresh fuel.
anyways, have a broken righ foot (handy with LH kick start) so cant take it out for a while, in the process of sorting a few things out.
questions.....

can anybody tell me if the exhaust/ muffler in attached photo is standard for this bike, i assume that the previous owner has adjusted jetting to suit however thought i'dcheck and see if anyone out there has said pipe and can suggest either way.
Riding would be about 200- 500m above sea level.
190- main
k32 needle- 3rd pos
38 idle
350- above float?
50- on other side next to idle jet?
would this listed jetting be appropriate for this pipe?

I've been told that the bike has had a 400 cam put into it due to a supply issue a few years ago, and that its good enough but not a perfect match timing wise. Whats the opinion on this, how would this effect the running of the bike? jetting? timing?

What is the principle behind manual hot start, as this has been fitted. And as i have not as yet taken it out, is there a specific hot starting technique that i could use once she's up and going. So far the cold start technique of 5 kicks choke on, then choke off tdc, firm kick works in 2 kicks.

Assessing compression w/out stripping bike down? comp tester, can this be done by not returning kickstarter all the way to the top thus avoiding engaging auto decomp. What would be a good comp pressure reading?

temp guage/ tacho, has anybody fitted these?

Is the voltage 6 or 12 for this bike

Rear disc rotor- are these interchangable with any other bikes?

Raising bars- how do i get the bar clamp bolts off as the nuts are recessed into the underside of the top triple clamp?-see pic

What is the model name of the WP forks on this bike? (for tuning info)

When flushing old oil, is running the bike stationary effective in warming/ circulating oil throughout the motor, or would it be better if gears were engaged and motor worked for a while before draining? Not sure how long the gunk has been sitting for.

I'm not asking for much am i- just good times in the woods with this nice swede.

thanks.
TP

I own a 96 FE 501 and I might be able to help a little. The Lazer pipe and muffler is the same as is on my bike. The carb settings, it might be best to download the shop manual and also witch carb is it? A VHSB 38mm or a PHM 40mm. My bike came with a VHSB 38mm since then I have replaced it with the PHM 40mm. The VHSB is a flat slide type so you might be able to check with out to much trouble. The cam I`am guessing here is to mellow out the power and it shouldn`t hurt anything as long as it was installed right. Your bike starting wise sounds like it is about right. All these bikes start a little different so no two are exactly the same. There others here who know how to check the compression but I don`t, sorry. Fitting a temp. guage you could try the temp. strips should work good. I don`t have anything like that on my bike. The voltage on my bike is 12 volts so is yours. Is your bike electric start? Don`t run these bikes long sitting still will over heat. You might have to repeat the flushing a few times to be sure. Alot of things in the 99 shop manual will work for the 96 with a few differences. The engines are basically the same. I hope this helps you out and good luck.
