70degree engine and clutch slave bleeding...

Hi all,

Bought into the Husaberg family with a 2011 FE450, to be able to ride with my son and his KTM 400EXC. First ride and I went down hard, handle bar in my eye and almost lost it (the eye). Clutch lever broke, and the master cylinder was leaking profusely. While the eye has healed since, I now want to ride again, but I have lost all feeling in the clutch. I took the slave off the block and saw that the diaphragm was broken as well, so I ordered an Oberon CLU-1000 slave cylinder replacement, and I also 'upgraded' to a Brembo master cylinder. I flushed the pipe, and cleaned the housing of the clutch slave cylinder to make sure that there would be no mix between the mineral oil previously used and the Brembo DOT 5.1 brake fluid I will use from now on.

Problem I have is how to properly bleed the clutch once back on that engine (I have done KTM's many times). There's just no way to get a small hose on top of the bleed nipple, and almost no way to properly crack open that nipple in the first place. How do you bleed the clutch on the 'berg with a 70 degree engine? Am I missing anything? Should I take the slave off, clamp the slave piston so it cannot pop out, when reverse bleeding? Or gravity bleed, but with almost no control?

Yes, you must remove the slave to bleed. Some sort of clamp to stop piston exiting, then just bleed like brakes, or go backwards with a syringe if you have one. I find this works best. It will be interesting to see if the Brembo master gets rid of the clutch drag- I went to Oberon slave to negate drag with no difference. Is the Brembo master 9.5mm bore?

My local KTM shop sold me the 79202030044 complete master clutch assembly. Fits and seems to do the job. (I mean, the slave cylinder piston moves somewhat when grabbing the clutch lever). A quick Google tells me this is the 9mm bore...

I will take off the slave again tomorrow and try to bleed with a clamp on the slave cylinder piston. Hopefully the clutch will become somewhat harder to work, and will function properly then...

I have a 2010fe 450, magura clutch. I do a gravity bleed, just open the nipple so fluid comes out , dont touch the lever and keep pouring fluid till u think you have replaced all the mineral oil. Boom dnr. Does work just messy

I use a syringe with a 1/4”? ID tube. You have to use needle nose pliers to jam it on, maybe pre open the tube with a Phillips screw driver first. But I don’t know about bleeding the stock slave, I use a rekluse slave, the nipple is accessible with an 8mm wrench. Takes me about 5 min. I use Magura blood mineral oil for the 70 degree.
