70 Degree Racing Map Switch Update

Barshoe said:
Any updates, 70 Degree? I want to order one, but I'm going to wait until this is all sorted out.

I received a reply from the switch maker and he assured me that they work as advertised. He is going to send me his information for me to post. He made the originals over a year ago and has to locate his notes.

I also want to say that I appreciate the support of some of the posts. This does not look good that the values do not match. But with that said we cannot begin to say what values the ecu needs in order to cycle between maps. I have no idea what it needs to see. What I do know is that the switch on my bike works just as the oem switch worked. I run on aggressive all the time except when it is raining during a race. I had the oem switch in 09, this is the reason we made this switch. It is not very user freindly. As soon as I have the info I will post it.

Thanks John Wiser

I have no problem supporting you efforts and integrity, but when I see statements like the one above, it doesn't instill much confidence in pushing the "purchase" button. KA

Dale, It would have been easy for the supplier to use the wrong resistors in a batch. He could have picked resistors with the wrong multiplier band color pretty easily. You probably ought to measure the resistance measurements through your switch positions (you only use the two pins in the black waterproof connector). I searched online for a 6.8k ohm and 15k ohm resistor but was only able to find them in batches of 100. Maybe your supplier has them?

Hi Busa,

I don't know what to say at this point other than John has been in communication with the switch maker, and has been cc'ing me on their discourse. John is a top notch rider, and I'm sure that he can feel the difference in the different maps.

As John stated, we are looking into what the ECU needs to see in order to have it be on different maps. I find it very interesting that the stock switch manual lists so many positions as being the OEM or standard map, that are other than 0 ohms. Logic dictates that with no switch the circuit would be open, and would therefore be the standard or OEM map, which are positions 0, 8, & 9.

As John stated above, we have been in contact with our switch maker and he will be getting back to us once he finds his original notes. He has been quite ill for sometime, so I'm willing to cut him some slack until he gets better. As John stated as soon as we know there will be a post to reflect what is what.

Thanks for your post, as well as all the other posts that are shall we say politely critical, which is what I would expect from members here on the UHE.

I just got off the phone with the switch vendor and they have bins of resistors in there shop, at some point someone added stock and missread the package by a 1000 ohms. With this said we do not know who got the switches with the wrong resistors as some could have one or both wrong. Anyone who has a 70 Degree map switch can either check the resistance or just send it to me and I will check it. I will replace any switch with the wrong resistors but I would like to have the old one back as to cut down on the loss. I checked the switch on my personel bike which was the first one made and it is correct. This is why I did not notice that anything was wrong. The vendor used an OEM switch (mine) to make his switch from which is why he had a hard time understanding the values that I was reporting to him. I will be sending an email to all switch customers who purchased a switch. I would like to apoligize to all of our customers for the inconvienence. The return address is

Awesome news! It is great to get to the bottom of this mystery. And even better that you stand behind your product!!!!!!

I think I lost track of what numbers I should be looking for when I check my switch. Would someone mind letting me know what resistance I'm supposed to see from the switch, and which wire or wires I check? Thanks!

BTW - I didn't receive any email from 70 Degree racing letting me know of this issue. It's possible that the email got filtered out as spam, but you still might want to double-check that you contacted everyone. I just bought my switch a few weeks ago, and it's still unwrapped. (Picking up my 390 tomorrow!!)

Hi Garrison,

As far as what wires to check, go to 70degreeracing.com and go to the installation page and look at the map switch installation instructions, you'll see that there are two wires that have to do with map switch itself. As far as the "numbers" go, just scroll up this page and you will find what you are looking for.

As far as being contacted via email.............My partner John has a rather large task ahead of him going back through the hundreds of emails that were sent to him to filter out which ones he sent map switches to, please be patient, I'm sure he will get to you.

As John said in his post, if you don't have the ability to check the switch yourself, just send it back and John will check it for you, and if it's wrong he will send you another as a replacement.

Hope this helps,

Dale

Dale, I sent mine back yesterday with a letter and return address. If John uses my old email address it'll probably bounce. No worries.

Can you hit the kill switch and change maps or do you have to completely stop the motor?

No.

The motor must stop spinning for the new map to take once you have changed maps.

I have just pulled my 70 degrees racing map switch loom apart and fitted the correct 6.8k ohm and a 15k ohm resistor respectivly ,
I have taken it for a run and basically cant feel the difference,
I was reading this post tonight and have an extension for this question
I may have not been letting the map setting take place???,
Do you need to wait for the headlight to go out ie power to ecu to power down before the new map will take place????
rob,

Yes. When you kill the motor the 'ignition' and hence the ECU is still live for a few seconds until the power relay shuts off, signified by the lights (and horn etc.) going off.

Pegscraper... I've got a 2002 model Border Collie that looks exactly like yours. Awesome characters. Previous one lasted 19 years. Hope yours breaks that.

My Collie was 15 last Sept. Won obedience trophy with her many years ago. She's quite slow on her pins now due to arthritits compared to what she was but still a great dog. Don't know how long she's got left but I'm dredding the day it comes.
Not sure what you mean by 'real' Collies. The most common colour is obviously the black and white. There's also Tricolour, Red Merle and Blue Merle. All real Collies and Great dogs :D :D
