70 degree motor goes out with a bang

:(

Sorry to see this. Initial thoughts on the cause?

I've been babying my 2011 FS570 this year hoping to avoid anything catastrophic like that.

The exhaust valve head in the first pic gives it away. I run an fairly radical cam profile on the standard valve springs, it was only a matter of time before it went bang. I don't think you need to baby it, the 70 degree engines are incredibly well built and survive on routine maintenance. Had I done a valve lash check before this event I'd have picked up the decreasing clearance and avoided the carnage.

Noticed the valve head, but thanks for the clarification! I am no mechanic (obviously).

9,500 km and about 140 hours on my 570 now, valves haven't needed to be adjusted yet. However, after seeing these photos I think I'll check them again at my next oil change :happy:

Will you be rebuilding? If so, I think it would be pretty cool if you took some photos along the way as you make progress!

I have started gathering parts, should be ready to build in a few months time, Ill be sure to photo it up. I should crack test and measure the cases before I start getting too keen on sourcing the parts !

I had a valve drop on my XC Falcon 3.3L 6 cyl and had to drive about 200km from when she dropped and she only ended making the top of the piston all mashed up, so I had something of a forged top of that piston, went and got another head slapped on it and drove it for 3 months and then turned it into a paddock basher for 6 months flogging and then a mate put it into his car and only then did it start blowing smoke.

But we are talking about a high tec Ford engine here, if only Ford made bikes. ha

Yes I will jon, no doubt about it. The price of a 610 kit outright is very competitive against the price of new genuine parts ! Going with a KTM 530 rod as well to open up options with the 19mm wrist pin.

Ha ha that's right jon, shiny bits. I just looked at my avatar and had a bit of a laugh. The 102mm bore will take it to 590cc ?

So far I have secured the cylinder and gaskets, a pro-x rod kit, mains and all the small gaskets and seals, I'll go to a bearing supply for gearbox bearings but the NJ 205 ECP counter shaft bearing is proving hard to nail down.

Should be a good thing. Do you have your engine apart at the moment ? I'm looking for the dimensions of the wrist pin.

Just an update the head is a write off as well over $1000 AUD to repair it without valves and springs, and a chance that the amount of weld going into it will soften the material.

Now I'm looking for a head similar to;
