650 Popping Out of Gearing or Slipping In and Out

Going down the straight away, power shifting as fast as I can. No Clutch, sometimes when going into 4th or 5th gear, the bike pops up out gear, nasty grinding noise, revs shoot up. Is it because I am not hitting the shifter hard enough or what?? It usually goes back into gear soon after this happens.

sounds nasty

if its a simple fix the external shifter bits might be loose, thats under the clutch cover

It sounds though like its more than that and to check it the cases need to come apart, Bummer

4rd/3th gears are usually the ones with all the problems they are not retained axially as well as the others and their design has a weak point where the gear necks down for the shift fork.

worn dogs increase the axial impact loads and if its slipping in/out gear they're probably stuffed 8O

good luck with it

Thanks, Its just weird that you can shift too quickly and not hit the shifter as hard as you would like, and the bike would click into gear, pop out and then back in. I think I pull in the clutch when it happens but I am not fully sure.

the shift star and the detent arm spring are kinda different to most bikes

husaberg have a pointy shift star with a lot of lift and run a soft detent arm spring, it should mean very light lever action and fast shifting but its a bit wierd, IMHO the shifting is done better with a stiffer spring.

I changed mine around a bit to get more positive shifting,

its a bit more like a tractor, heavy lever, slower shifting but suits my engine fine, i only need 2 gear changes a lap with the 700, with the 628 i changed gears 20-30 times a lap 8O

when you move the lever all that happens is the shift star rotates enough that the detent arm goes over the next tip on the shift star, then the gears move along the shaft later when they are pushed in by the detent arm spring so the actual shifting is done not by your foot but by the spring and the shift star profile.

what happens if the gear dogs are stuffed and the shaft circlips have fallen off the axial impact loads from the gears bouncing back and forth on the shaft are high enough to turn the shift star back and make the detent arm go back up popping out of gear, it revs up with the gear dogs disengaged and goes back in again when the detent arm spring can push the shift star back around.

its a bit like a complicated moustrap game, when you "shift" all you do is set it off, the actual shifting is done all by itself later on. bummer is even when you understand it the gears still cost the same!

cheers
