600's -What Year Engines Are The Same????

I've had my 2000 FC 600 engine semi torn-down for a while now.
Looks like worn big-end bearings on the con-rod, plus a new camchain (and probably a few other bits 'n' bobs).
I've been too busy riding the CR500 to fix the 'Berg, but now i've sold the Honda and need to fix it.
What year engines for the 600 are the same (or very similar) to my 2000 model?
I'm looking for a replacement engine in good running order to transplant into mine whilst I fix the original one.
Having a second engine will be useful for spares in the future too.
Anyone know of anyone who's got a good 600 motor for sale in the UK???
Cheers,
Ross

get rid of that H**** from your signature now!

DCR has a load of gear mate thats used and breaking etc.

as for an engine? i'd go gung-ho at this one mate straight away. do it once - do it well!

1997 - 2000 motors are all very similar.

Download the 2000 parts manual as it will tell you how far back a particular part is supposed to fit.

Some parts are the same all the way back to 88-89.

There's a couple of earlier 600's - cica '94 - on ebay just now.
I've asked the sellers if they are willing to sell the engine only.
Should the earlier engine fit the 2000 frame?
One of the earlier bikes engine number is : 1120062 - what year is this?
Cheers guys,
Ross

Yeah,
Looks like I'm gonna have to bit the bullet and get her done ASAP!
Guys on ebay aren't playing ball.
I was looking for a quick stop-gap to get me rolling again whilst my original engine was re-furbed, but this looks like a non-starter.
Cheers!

hi, as i can recognise from the picture of your avatar surely your motor is not a 2000, but likely a 1999 or earlier until 1997.

I have to disagree. What would indicate that its not a 2000?

waterpump cover- clutch cover - shift lever,
unless all these 3 items were changed in this motor with earlier items

Yes those would indicate a year other than 2000 but how can you see that detail in the tiny avatar pic? Maybe I am just getting old............

some time ago there was a thread with this bike with a large picture which was the same with the picture of the avatar, this is were i noticed the items.

of course its impossible to identify these details from the avatar, sorry for the confusion

This looks like a 2000 with 99 forks and wheels and 01+ radiator shrouds. The full titanium exhaust system, which this has, was unique to 2000 FCs. Also the blue tank was unique to 2000 and that seat was 2000-01. The shifters had holes drilled but were weak, mine kept bending into the clutch cover and I replaced it eventually. The 2000+ brake rotors are wavy, these are not. The positive way to tell about the engine is the clutch. 2000 was the last old style engine and the first with hydraulic clutch. If this has a hydraulic clutch it's a 2000, if not it's 99 or older. I used the 99 shop manual to take my engine apart twice for gearbox problems, otherwise my engine is all original, raced for 4 years although our seasons are short here in Alaska.

I just raced mine Sunday after installing a Recluse auto-clutch in it Saturday night. I hadn't even started it for 2 years. The clutch worked good first time but I could not get good starts with it. I used to get a lot of holeshots with this bike.

I think the bike is a mixture of '99 and 2000.
It's a 2000-style frame, but the frame number indicates it's a '99.
The conventional 50mm WP forks also suggest it's a '99.
Probably a '99 engine as it's got a cable clutch.
Plastics, exhaust and other stuff can be changed easily enough, so ignore those.
The frame is also braced between the bottom two tubes below the ehaust manifold, right at the front engine mounting points.
This looks like it's been done at the factory, so I'm wondering if the bike was an early or pre-production run of the 2000 style frame, built by the factory in '99.
Probably never know.
