570 Baja 1000 set up

Hello everyone, this is my first post on this forum and I'm looking to get some ideas and opinions on set up for my 570. I'm heading down to race the Baja 1000 solo on my "new to me" 09 570. I raced a KTM 300 down there last year and well...lets just say I learned things the hardway :oops:

My 09 570 has 30hrs of enduro/trail use, has not had any typical issues with fuel pumps and such and has been a very reliable machine so far. The modds I'm doing right now are as follows:

Scotts rubber mount steering damper
70 Degree subframe tank and rad guards
Samco radiator hoses, cooling fan, Evans NPG-R
heat wrapped pipe and FMF Power Core 4 (in Mexico loud pipes really do save lives 8O )
Twin air filters with dust covers
Ballistic 8 cell battery
Thumper Racing crank case vent
Dirt Tricks cam chain tensioner.

I'd like to hear what kind of suggestions you guys have as far as other mods, spare parts I should bring (fuel pump?) and such.
I was considering buying a second 570 to take down and use as a parts bike but it might not be in the budget so lets here some opinions on set up to get this bike to the finish :cheers:
 
1 have Dale E O set up your suspension
2 handguards
3 fuel pump, replace it, solder on connectors, install fuel filters
4 ultra heavy duty tubes
5 balance wheels
6 tm designs chain guides
7 trail tech voyager
8 radiator fan
9 swap coolant with engine ice
10 disassemble every pivot point and pack all bearings by hand!
11 HAVE FUN!!!!

i'm sure the rest of the guys have got lots more advice for you!

The guys from Duncan Motorsports (Duncan, British Columbia) raced a 570 two years ago, and finished. The lead guy there has prepped a bunch of Dakar efforts. Sorry, I don't know more than this - I just bought an RV aqualine tank from their prerun bike.

I would swap to a better head gasket, as I'm told the stockers can fail at sustained high rpm. Also, vent the crank breather to a filter. You don't want it venting to the air box. This year is a peninsula run, so lots of sustained high speed. Stock it would pump oil to the box and eff up the FI.

Keep in touch - I will likely be in Baja for the 1000 this year. I have a buddy who may be trying to solo it as well. If he doesn't race, we'll likely go down to ride and watch the race. We watched from Ensenada last year, and it was unreal fun.
 
What kinda crank case ventilation is good for these bikes? Just a simple filter on the end of hose into atmosphere?
Mine still vents into airbox and it's always oily when I wash the bike and pull the filter out.
 
I'm running the Thumper Racing crank vent and it seems to work well, don't even seem to have any carry over at sustained high load/RPM. Great upgrade!

Another thing I would like to hear your guys opinions about is tires. I ran Maxxis Desert IT last race and although the rears held up reasonably well, the fronts were crap! Ended up cutting off knobs and slicing side walls in the rocky sections. I was thinking of trying Michelin AC10 this year instead. I ran Michelin Deserts on my prerunner and didn't get a single flat in over 1400km of riding! Only problem is that they only make the rear tire in one size which is to large to fit the berg and the AC10 are the closest equivalent.
 
I did Tecate to Cabo this past March on my "09", not in one day though, we took 8. The tips you've received so far are good. I also had oil in my air box. Ran a Maxis IT front and a Dunlop 606 130 rear. Both held up very well, no flats, ultra heavy duty tubes, with slime, balanced. The only thing I could mention is grip heaters. Sounds funny I know but I installed them and they paid off on of the days, big time. And my friend Mike Kornwinder who has won the 1000 solo froze his tail off going down the pacific side in the fog at night.
 
Good call on the grip warmers, although I'm concerned I won't have enough juice to run them. I'll be running BD dual 8" hids which pull about 7 amp plus a helmet light so heaters might be a bit much. how much milage did you get out of those 606's?
 
I ran 1 D606 on the rear and 1 Maxis Desert IT front for the whole 1583 miles. It might have been nice to change the rear after say 1000 miles or so and I was wishing for a fresh tire the last 500 miles, but they made it and performed quite well I must say.

The 570 berg proved itself to me, I was the only FI bike out of 12, let alone the only berg. Came home and bought a 2011 plated, and am now moving ALL my trick stuff over to the 2011.

I will plug George at ESP suspension too, he did mine and it was PERFECT! He does an incredible job when it comes to suspension. I came to appreciate it and the berg in the Matomi Wash.
 
That would be great, I'm a little nervous about doing the suspension on the Berg. I've had my other bikes done by Race Tech and they always come back feeling way to stiff, almost MX like. I want to keep it plush enough to be comfortable but stiff enough top handle higher speeds. Thanks for the info on the tires, I'll take a closer look at the Dunlops. The Michelin AC10's have a speed rating of 86 mph which makes me a little worried so maybe the Dunlops are the answer. Were you running dust covers on the air filter? How many miles were you getting from a filter before it had to be replaced? We changed ours out on the KTM 300 every 200 miles on race day but they had allot of rain a couple days before the race so dust was minimal. Hoping I can get by with changing filters on the berg every 200 miles this year.
 
I did run a filter skin on my air filter, pulled it after about 350 miles, then rode about 350 more before changing the filter. But I must add that I was the lead rider everyday and never had to ride any dust.

DALE E O SUSPENSION is the only way to go. First, he is a desert racer and true Husaberg lover. Second, he just completed the suspension on my second FX-450. This time, I needed a little stiffer in some parts of the stroke to handle high-speed sand whoops but without losing supple control over the slippery roots we have in our series here in Florida. The bike came back amazing. Now, my first was already great but I have improved as a rider and he properly figured our what to do and it is nothing short of fantastic. So I highly suggest talking to Dale.

On the Engine Ice, I do not think it is great. We routinely have 90 to 100 degree weather with no circulation as we wind through swamp and forest single track here in Florida. I found that the Engine Ice boiled over nearly as bad as the factory installed products, even with the fan kit installed. I went to Prestone 30% and distilled water 70% with Redline Water Wetter and it has not boiled over since and the fan runs much less. Even marking trail and pulling arrows on the FX-450, meaning idling every 50 yards or so with it in gear but on the Rekluse it never whimpered or spit at me.
 
Thanks for the advice. I emailed Dale yesterday so just waiting to hear back from him. Having someone who races desert and knows these bikes would be an asset. Most tuners up here have never seen a desert before, they just do MX, SX setups and it shows. Personally I'm a fan of Evans NPGR. I've used it in a number of race bikes and have had great results. I only use Engine Ice in late season riding where the temps get below 0. Any suggestions on gearing? Point to point run this year so lots of fast straights. I was thinking 14/48, any ideas?

I got an FE450 09 and found it WAAY too tall for really good woods riding. so i got SuperPlush in SF to lower it. At first i lowered it 1.5" (oops) and it felt like an xr100. then they changed it to .75" and did their magic on the bike. its a totally different bike. Highly recommend their service: Super Plush Suspension

Extra spark plug and boot that attaches to the cap. Have seen failures of these items thinking it was the fuel pump but turned out to be the spark plug then when the bike would get wet the boot caused problems

X 2 Dale for suspension he even favors the open chamber forks that you have on the 2009 570

Grip warmers get the ame they are supper efficient but its the entire grip they are very firm. You could set it up and swap the grips out they clamp on
