My first post, so be gentle !!

I am planning on buying a brand new 2004 550 SM

I plan on doing the regular oil /filter changes but have also read that I will have to adjust the valves after so many hours use.
How difficult is this to do ?
Do I need special tools or to take it back to the shop ?

Is there anything else that I need to be aware of before I buy ? 8O

Thanks

550 maintenance

when you use your husa as it should (hard racing) it will need oil changing after 10 hours and valve clearance checking after 20 hours.
for the valve clearance you will need a filler with the appropriate thickness (o.12mm), a screwdriver for the valve adjustement screw and a wrench for the valve adjustement locknut.
the engine should be cold, you have to remove the seat, fuel tank with the radiator's side plastic panels and the radiator. then remove the sparkplug, the 2 rocker arm covers, set the piston to TDC and do the adjusting job, i suppose you know how to do this don't you?

I've got a 2004 550 that i use for SM. I've done about 6 race weekends on it + the odd trackday. All I do to it is change the oil after ever ride. I was told the valves will only need doing of it becomes hard to start.

Yes I do know how to adjust valves but wasn't sure how difficult/time consuming it was to adjust the Bergs.

Thanks Stickywicket, thats good to know !

Thanks !

After a couple of goes it only takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to adjust the valve clearances including stripping and rebuilding the bike.

I use the 1/8th of a turn or 3/4 of the hexagon flat method

I was also worried about this before buying the Berg but now think its easy.

I have done nearly 8000 kms on mine (hard and soft road riding) I change the oil every 5 hours though.

Get a Stainless steel oil filter which can be reused and saves u £5.70 each change.
