501 .. starter problems.

hi, i have an 01 400fe with a 501 engine in it ... the bike will start on the first or second kick always but i cannot get it to start on the starter motor ... heres what ive tried so far. all by following the manual
fully charged battery, set ignition timing to factory spec ..set valve gaps, ran it up to temperatue adjusted idle and air/fuel mix screw correctly ... set the decomp adjustment to 2mm
but it still will not for the life turn it over i have removed the starter and tried it, and it spins perfectly ... ... also something else ... which may be of use to you to know ... the manual decomp lever has been removed so it only has the auto decomp .. b ut even if i adjust the auto decomp so the starter will turn the engine over it still will not start and flattens the battery quickly ... alsp the stator is fairly rusted so i cleaned it all off today aswell .. the lights are fixed to run only when the engine runs but dont seem to charge the battery.

The bike being an 01 is the problem. First and foremost you will need to change the autodecompression device to that of an 04 -08 part. You will also have to machine the cam to make it fit. Contact Taffmeisters as he has the part as well as a modified spring and all the advise you will need to make it start on the button. Read the old posts for other tweaks to help. Most 01's and 02's have never started on the button stock.

you need a carb spruce up kit fella for 64 quid
adjust the ignition to 1mm to the left of centre - forget the book
the battery needs to be changed to a CTZ7s or the newer Li-on battery

Eric is right, the auto decomp and a MODIFIED spring.

BTW, the 400 had a 38mm carb and different jetting to the 501.

when you say "spruce up kit" .... running conditions are great .. jetting seems fine, plenty of power, no flat spots, and no backfires etc .. what will the spruce kit be doing ?
i shall advance the timing as suggested, and try a new battery aswell, thanks
 
they run rich and burble. I doubt it is right it is OK. starting them cold is OK but half warm is the difference. nobody has ever fitted this kit and said oh i wish I'd saved my money!

starting from warm again is no issue, it will start fine, ... the only time i have trouble starting it when warm is if im worn out and cant kick it ... im short so struggle to get my leg up on it, or if i fall off ... it'll take a couple mins to have to sit before it will start ...
what does the kit consist of ?
