501 LIGHTS DULL

Hi all,
I am trying to get the headlight working on my recently purchased 02 fe 501. Headlight was not working but found plug at globe not connected. I have reconnected the plug and the headlight works but goes dull as the revs increase. I swapped the two yellow wires from the stator coils and no difference, bike has new battery and is charging at around 14.1v. Can someone assist with some advice on where I should look or what I could try, that might identify the problem.

dull light

i am not an expert on these things but i would check the earth from the rear of the headlight plug to the chasis thers should be three wires in the plug low beam, high beam and earth a good way to check is to simply run a jumper wire from the chasis or negative terminal on battery to the earth behind the head light if the headlight becomes brighter you have a bad earth connection
i hope this is of some help, good luck

i'll bet if you activate the brake lite it gets brighter. signs of a bad ground. could also be a failing lamp, but not likely.

Thanks for the feedback.
There are 4 wires in the plug , Blue & yellow to 1 terminal, white to another and the brown earth wire the the third terminal. Checked the brown wire which runs back to the earth block at the regulator this seems fine. Ran a jumper wire just to be sure as well, but still dull light.
Activate the brake light ...... still no change.
As the brake light had been on continuously, I did some investigating there as well so I could get it working properly.
I did find the grey brake light wire plugged into the earth terminal at the tail light and the brown earth plugged into the brakelight terminal, swapped these back .The brakelight now functions properly but still no change to the headlight when I activate the brakelight.
Could the crossed over wires have caused some damage to the lighting circuit perhaps ?
Any other thoughts as I am at a loss with my limited electrical skills ?

Hello Mick,

The 2002 Husaberg FE runs the lights off of regulated AC.

The out put from the alternator is split between a regulator/Rectifier for the battery (used only for the electric starter) and a separate regulator for regulation of AC for the lights.

Here is a copy of the 02 wiring diagram. You need Adobe Acrobat to open it, free at www.adobe.com

I would also bet on the ground connection for the bulb to be bad.

Regards,

Joe

Or the A/C regulator is bad. I recently had to replace the A/C regulator on my 01 501 as the bulbs were burning out--Voltage was way too high. After reading the through the Husaberg manual any incontation of troubles, dim light, no light, burning out bulbs, could be the fault of the A/C regulator.

Joe USA could very well be right about the bad ground, so that should be checked out as well. Or, it could have the wrong bulb in it as well. Try hooking up a digital volt meter set on A/C voltage and check the reading. Should be in the neighborhood of 12-14 VAC. Use the ground wire in the plug, as well as using the motor itself as ground, that will also help you troubleshoot whether or not you have a grounding problem at the plug, or a problem with the regulator.

You say the light get's dimmer as you rev the motor. Am I to assume correctly that the light is bright at low rev's?? If that is true then IMHO it points to the regulator.

Hi Joe & Dale,
I am pretty confident the earth from the H/light is ok and I have a jumper lead from the H/light plug to the engine as well.
I hooked a digital ac multi -1 lead to the plug at the headlight the other to the engine and get a reading of 9v at either wire (hi or lo) when they are not plugged into the bulb and if I plug into the bulb the reading drops to 6v. The bulb is a 12v 35/35.
Maybe regulator yes? If so do I need a genuine husa reg or is there a universal type that would be easier to get, available ?

what is the voltage at your taillight? if its 12, then there is something wrong in your headlight circuit, like a bad switch. if its low, too, turn off the lights and disconnect the wire going to the yellow of the regulator and read the voltage. it should be significantly higher than your 9vac. if its low, too YOUR STATOR IS PROBABLY FRIED. if it is higher, then your regulator is no good. but usually a regulator will fail open or dead short. if you need to replace it, a regulator from any offroad style bike with no battery will work. mine is using one from an old dr350 suzuki. you can prolly find a new generic 12v one for cheap.
the crossed wires on your taillight weren't a problem.

Hey Ned,
Me thinks you onto somethin here. Voltage at taillight and stoplight is same as headlight - around 9v does not really get any higher but drops to as low as 7vac.
Unplug yellow to to reg and presto we have power, 12v at idle and rising to 35+v as the revs increase.
Sooooo... Would we agree the reg is no more good or what ???

Cheers
and again thanks all, for the advice, I know know a little more about my hussy now, part of the fun of owning one they tell me !

the regulator is not working! before trashing it, make sure it is not corroded at the ground post. sandpaper it good and try it again.

So im sitting there and suddenly, I spot my trusty old Husky 610 in the corner...... 10 minutes later the Hussy has a Husky reg and lights that dont go dull any more.
13.1 Vac at high idle.FIXED !!
