Was wondering if anyone has had trouble in the cold with their starting ( think we all have). it's about 25f degrees, valves are in adjustment and i am getting spark, but still can't get the beast to fire. seems that after a few kicks i wet the plug. what gives? never had this problem before, but it was nice summer weather before!

maybe try a squirt of "start ya *******" or carby cleaner in the air filter to see if it just needs a reminder to start.

what model and year fella?

try and keepit somewhere on the screen like most of us if you can. and location is anothewr one.

Taffy

sorry thought it would show up!? it was in my signature. 96 fc 501 to be exact. location is on the left.

it could be so many things. fresh fuel is vital with todays unleaded fuels. they lose their body very quickly.

choke jet blocked.

general wear and tear on all the carb parts.

mixture settings might be wrong for the winter. they need less fuel to start.

try and get it running and then check all your electrics from the stator with a multimeter. you'll find all the information in the doc.

Hmm a common mistake - the site has changed to another format and signature has to be put in the less obvious place :) Schwim is the expert / culprit :) Probably pinned in site forum.

thanks again guys! unfortunatly it has to be done quick so i am taking it to the husa-dealer. 215 bucks to get it all set doesn't seem too bad to me.

Sounds like the little hole in the carb next to the rubber boot from air filter is blocked. Well when the dealer goes through it they should find it.
Good luck.

well money got tight...i have a wife.... so could you elalborate on this hole? i have the stock delorto on it, any recomended settings?

On your carb on the air boot side at the bottom. When you pull the air boot away from the back of the carb there is a little hole at the bottom. When it stops up it will do what you described. That holds true with the VHSB and PHM. Right near the bottom, once the air boot going to the aircleaner is removed you will see it. It gets plugged with crud so you will have to use carb cleaner, spray type and maybe a real fine wire to open it. That hole can cause a lot of problems. Check that first and if your bike was running great until just recently then you should be close to right on settings. Might have to richen up the fuel screw or air screw but other than that should be fine. PM me if you have any questions.
Hope this helps.

Well you had it there finally got a chance to check it out. the hole had the tiniest of junk in it. started first kick after that. definitely made a change to everything. i am at 500ft above sea level whet needle position and air screw settings would you recomend? Now i have a mid range bubblyness that i never had before. thanks so much again!

I think if the bike was running fine before all this you might try screwing in the fuel/air screw on the side of the carb to lean it out. What is the setting now. Mine is 1 1/2 turns out but since these carbs are all different you might want to tinker some. Make sure your choke is turned completely off. The choke might need a drop of oil put on the shaft and worked up and down. Works like the pull up choke knob on a old RM. Is you carb a VHSB or a PHM? Let me know. Hope this helps.

VHSB here. recomended by manual is two to three turns out. i am at 2 1/4 now and it starts first kick and has great low end and only way to describe top end is bat out of he*l fast. so i am thinking its mainly the needle position?

Are you refering to the needle clip settings? If so you might get it a little closer but with the VHSB I had on my bike it was either flood or famine. So I left the setting alone. I leaned it one way and the bike was unridable- like riding a light switch either all power on or off. I didn`t try the other setting because it would have flowed more fuel so I left it at the setting it was to start with. You could check and see what the needle number is and maybe change needles but I have no experence in that. The VHSB I had on my bike was a 38mm. I replaced it with a PHM 40mm and it made a difference- cold starting wise and running. I think you still might be able to tune it a little more with what you have. Your on the right track. How does it do turned 2 1/2 turns out?
Hope this helps
