change both i'm afraid mate or weld carefully the one you've got. the welding is nearly always unsuccessful because oil sits in the very crack you are welding and i don't care how much you blah blah that you washed it. IT'S THERE MAKING THE WELD AWFUL!

an aussie has been trying for a long while to get rid of a set of 400 cases on ebay. i think the cases are the same but that you may need to bore the mouth out for the 100mm spigot.

find a guy who does alloy welding for a living maybe one who the insurance companies use for bike repairs. You could go and ask a local mc shop. When running a mc work shop we used a guy who was fantastic i turned up to his workshop one day with a hd still leaking oil fom a hole smashed threw the cases from a broken chain .I only went to let him have a look at it on the way back to our shop after picking it up from the side of the road.I was told to get it off the trailer ,handed a fire extinquisher and in a few minutes it wass fixed. The owner was there with me and was rapped .He wass back on his way after a new chain was fitted.this welder also has repaird a honda cbx 6 cylinder that went down the road and wore threw the cam tunnels and the the cases $2000 dollars later you couldnt tell the bike had beed on its side.It was a work on engineering art.Back before the jap imports here he was repairing the ally heads -broked wheels and alloy radiators/oil coolers as well as alot of broked bike cases and barrels.

Of course this guy did nothing but weld alloy The machine he used was about 4 meters long and about 1.5 meters high back in the early days of electronics. Now yopu could do the same with a mobile unit. The only alloy he didnt like was salt effected or cow **** soaked alloy then it was like chasing the hole in a rusty exhaust.

So start at a bike shop that does insurance work and you should find someone who knows what they are doing.
good luck.

Don't know who has been doing your welding, but a proper welder wouldn't just weld over the crack, he would grind it out, drill holes at the ends of the crack and then weld it.

wow! i was really hoping someone would ask that! most from the UK will have heard of the national welding institute at abingdon near cambridge. top teacher did my pantah cases.

last i saw they had him in a straight jacket heading for the van....

I also had a similar problem on my FE501 '00. The right cranckase was damaged. After some discussions with mechanics and some talks with dealers I decided to buy only the right side cranckase. And guess what - the motorcycle is still runing with no leaks after two years. I only had to grind it carefully (or how it is called in English), afterthat added some silicon and there was no linkage at all.

But the reason of his failure, couldn't of been the metal still being dirty with oil?

well i did tell you and you don't believe me! i had three cases done and all done with no result. especially when they go across an oil gallers as well. i can only tell you it as it was then in the eighties.
