Good evening! I've recently developed a bit of a leak from the weephole on my 99 400fe. I read up a bit on the topic and have gathered that 1 of the 2 seals around the camshaft are leaking. I went ahead and ordered both seals and some other odds and ends for the job. Reading through the factory service manual it talks about removing the cam. What I'm curious about it when I pull the chain tensioner will I have enough room to wiggle the cam sprocket out without removing anything further? Service manual isn't quite clear enough for my thick skull. Thanks!!

it's been a while since i've done a first gen motor, but i remember it was quite easy

if you are lucky you can get the cam around to a point where you can mark it and the slip link is on top of the sprocket. unclip it for the work.

unfortunately, at least 50% of cam chains are soft link.

try and get a couple of new 6201C32Rs bearings and put them on with the seals still on them. finally, make sure the decomp whacks up really really fast, any sign of floppiness, tighten it up.

Thanks for the input guys! Taffy I actually just watched your decomp video from your site yesterday. When you say tighten it up, do you mean in terms of a spring replacement? It's worth mentioning the bike has been gone through at some point and currently has an auto decomp setup in it. From what I can tell the factory 400 had a manual decomp? Or did the e start bikes all get the auto setup?

every bike got the auto decomp...MX and all. its not that you have one, its whether you have the right one and the strength of the spring. most people know when a spring goes slack that 'tighten it up' is the opposite. english is my only language....you're doing fine!

From what I have seen the 1st gen estart bikes did not get a manual decomp. They probably figured that if you have an estart you will probably never kick it. If you upgrade to the auto decomp device from a 2004-2008, use a new or Taffy's modified spring and pretension it so that the auto decomp device snaps back into its resting place quickly, you would never need a manual decomp anyway. If you use the 04-08 decomp device you may need to machine the cam shoulder so the decomp device will rest properly on the cam. I think it may be a straight bolt in but I forget......Taffy would know for sure. Nice thing about the estart bikes is that they have a counterbalancer whereas the kick start only models do not.

according to the parts books each year had a manual decomp Eric. all except one, the 1999.

the 1998-2002s have the thick shoulder that needs machining back for sure but the 1996 and 1997 happen to have a smaller gap between the sprocket bolt holes in the cam and the first lobe so they don't need any modifying.

the waters are muddied by some confusion when opening engine top ends and finding its not true. not true or Lineaweaver/Clark had already been in there.....nobody will know.

FYI my 97 600FX E did not have the manual decomp and no provision to add one. A bolt was used to cover the valve lifter hole. I did purchase a used vavle lifter rod and installed one myself but using a KTM cam (your intel) and 04-08 decomp device really did the trick.
