How would you characterize the differences of these motors. (Leaving all maint stuff asside) I'm leaning hard towards a 550, when I know I'd probably go faster on the 400. Does that make sense? I ride in the Nevada Desert (not much into Moto) and am somewhere in the 25% of fast riders in the area. Not because of sure speed but because of endurance. I want a ride that's not exausting to ride, that won't leave me at the bottom of a hill either. Plus, one that I can improve with. I'm 5'7" 170 Lbs dry. 39yrs. (Yep, the older I get the faster I was 8) )

Hi Jay:

I have a 470 and a 600. My next one will definitely be the 550. The 600 is a bit much and the 470 could use a bit more rock hurling ability. I think the 550 would be a perfect desert bike.

John,

What kind of riding do you prefer tight single-track or wide-open roads (left or right). If you are leaning left go for a smaller bike, if it is right definately go for the 650 mine loves to cruise 70mph with no sweat. I can make my 650 work good in the tight stuff, but when it gets gnarly like "1st" gear canyons with waterfalls and rock ledges you definately notice the power and compression braking, but at the same time the bike has so much power you don't work it that hard so it should last longer.

I am planning on riding thursday (VET's day) if you have it off let's go ride, and I'll let ya take the 650 for a spin.

The 450 is a lovely machine but you would get to wide open throttle just too easily. The 650 is a completely and utter animal - my 01 650 that puts out less power than the current models still digs a ditch with the back wheel in 6th gear, it literally just spins and spins on the power.

The 550 is probably the best choice - huge power when you need it but a little softer. Many of the guys around here choose the 550 just for that reason - these are guys that, in my opinion, really do know how to ride offroad too.

Have fun!
Simon

I see in your sig that you ride a 300 now. Do you want more power? The same power? Or a little less power?

How was your KTM 600? Too much or just right, or not enough?

I could recommend the right bike for me to ride in the Reno area. But to recommend the right choice for you, I need to know which bike that you owned most closely fits the bill.

Power wise, the 550 will closely match your old KTM 600.
The 400 will be slightly less than your KTM 300 and the 550 will be slightly more than your KTM 300.

For tight singletrack, the 400 would be the best choice.

For 4th or 5th gear desert, the 650 is the ticket.

Even the 550 will be a handful in the tight stuff. I have a 501 and it is a handfull in the 1st and 2nd gear tight stuff. But for a combination of singletrack and open desert, the 550 is what I would choose.

Not too many 70MPH sections

AJT knows that it will be mostly endless whoops, knarly hills, sand washes, deep sand and rocks, some wooded areas and snow. Ahh the snow rides.

Previous rides:
The 300 is weak.. The RMX I had was faster..
The 620 LC4 was pretty nice but heavy. Not too much fun in the slower stuff.
I did like to old KTM 600 I had, (until it caught fire and burned to the ground during the Virginia City Grand Prix).

400 - out
450 - out
550 - :D
650 - :?
