400 rod kit

i now have a rod kit available with the original 120mm centre to centre and thus correct LENGTH rod available for the 2001-2003 400s AND THE 470s.

until now we have had to lose 1mm off the length. so back to a straight swop now.

I also have a piston that is 0.4mm taller and thus will give a good boost in power as it closes up the squish clearance to near racing standards. I just need to finalise the piston safety before I let it go and will be using it in my own bike in a back-to-back test I hope.

listed on ebay I believe if Alison has put it there?

the rod I mention can be used as an extra long rod in the 450 then the piston will have to be milled down in orderto obtain the perfect squish.

Hi,
does anybody know the piston-to-deck height of FE450 2004-2008 (with original standard piston)? Also piston height and piston dome displacement would be interesting to know. Thanks. I am using the crank from FE400 2001-2003+prox domed 12:1 piston (originally for 2003-2006 SX450KTM) and the piston-to-deck height is cca 1.24mm (0.049in). The piston edge is lower than the cylinder deck. According to my calculations which I made so far, the compression ratio is too high (19:1). Maybe I did some mistake somewhere, because the bike ran with this setup normally. The only problem was that the water went to the combustion area, thats why I want to try another piece of head+new head gasket. I didnt measure the squish clearance yet. Dont know what an ideal (original) squish clearance should be anyway. That is another question.
Thanks for any answered question.

your squish should be a minimum of 1mm. and if the piston is below the top of the block it means you have at least 1.4mm gap.

I have a piston for every occasion and sugggest that if you really want it to be right that you sell your piston on and start again with one of mine.

also, the 450 has a different rod length compared to the 400/470. the 450 is 119mm and the 400/470 is 120mm.

I always found the 450 to be far too "on/off" and jerky. I've persuaded many people to go for a lower comp but get the squish right. basically a tall but flat piston.

thanks taffy, I know the rod is 1mm longer and the stroke 2.9mm longer. That is why I had worries. do you still want me to do the thing U asked me via private message? I was away from internet all wknd, couldnt do it sooner. ...and thought once someone puts longer rod into engine, as I already did, could have questions similar to mine.
my piston is already installed and I cant split cases just like that at home by myself, so for this time, I will let it there. good to know that my setup is safe and what are your suggestions. thanks.
