390 racers: gearing?

How are you FE 390 riders getting along with the bike's overall gearing? Feeling the need to change it up, or fine with it as is? At a quick pace through the lower gears, does the transmission feel too "gappy"?

I'm not seeing a lot of options for it, being that the rear chain ring is about as large as they come, and going with a 12t front seems it would cause interference between the chain & swingarm buffer? I'm due to take delivery of an FE 390, but some riders' comments regarding power & gearing has given me pause enough to consider maybe opting for the 450 in its stead. My primary reason for choosing the FE 390 is the purported light handling and its prowess over gnarly terrain (2nd-3rd gear stuff). If the 450 offers similar benefits with a more flexible power delivery, I may have to change my order. :?

I run a 12 front with the stock 52 on the rear and I have had no problems with the buffer and chain. Usually you see stuff rubbing off and/or big grooves, but I haven't.

If you want to go larger in the rear you'll have to get a different guide as 52 is as large as you can go with the stock guide.

As for gaps, etc. - I can't speak to that - I don't race and I have a 570 so...

Thanks for the feedback. Good to hear about the 12t not causing problems. I'll have to scope out Lafferty's setup to see if there're any alterations for fitment.

Looking at the 390/450/570, they all seem to share the same trans ratios & final gearing, which is the same for a KTM 400 XC-W. So I'm expecting the 390 should be able to pull at least as well as the 400.

I suppose that it depends on the riding terrain, but for me 12/52 gearing would be way too low for 'all purpose' riding. Much of the potential of these engines, especially the 570, would be sacrificed with such low gearing. Even the stock 13/52 gearing is too low, especially for the 570. Note also that a 12 tooth sprocket will be much harder on the chain and chain guide.
