390 oil change every 10 hours?

Interested in thoughts please from wiser people than me. I change my oil on the 390 every 10 hours, filters every third change. Oil comes out in pretty good condition I think.

Is this too frequent? Friends think I'm mad and should change to 20 hours.

Just do trail riding in 3 to 5 hour runs.

Thanks.

10 hrs is fine for X country cruising, but on tarmac and the MX track I would change it every 5 hours. I personally run it also for 10 hrs, but sometimes for longer rides when there are no or very little tools available I run it for 3 days, which is 24 hrs of consecutive riding.

The full synthetic oil comes out very black, but does not smell burned what so ever

Filter change I would suggest every other oil change, 3 x is too long.

Thanks - correct God to good condition! :)

bummer, thought you were on to something special there.

FE570 but shouldn't be too different to the 390 so this is what i'm doing... dealer advised 1000km (600 miles) for easy adventure riding. oil was coming out very clean, checked with other berg riders and they said 1500km should be fine for easy riding. been doing that now and seems about right. the oil looks fairly dirty but isn't pitch black.

I don't quite get this.

The bike costs around £7k new; by the time you've bought fuel, tyres, chain, brake pads, sprockets, the odd lever etc, 10 hours riding has probably cost over £100.

The oil gets contaminated by all sorts from ring blow-by and clutch friction material to metal particles from internal wear. So why try and save £3 by not changing the filter with each oil change?

I used to have an RMZ450 EFI. Because of fuel blow by I was forced to change it every 3 hours. The oil was badly contaminated and would smell like real fuel. Not dark though.

Nevertheless, on some days I was forced to ride 8 hours on one load of oil. You cannot change oil in the bush, can you?

And the oil I put in is not three bucks, but f*cking 10 pound Sterling a liter as it was Mobil V300 double ester. The advantage of these highly sophisticated oils is that in emergencies (longer rides) you can let them sit for a while.

£3 for the filter!!!

I don't get changing the oil without also changing the filter (as a general practice).

OE filters are more like £6 each but still can't see point in changing oil and leaving an old filter in. Change mine between 15-20 hrs trail riding use. I don't go for the expensive high performance bike specific oils at over £10 liter. I use synth 'car' oil at around 1/2 the price and have no probs.

I'm changing my oil out every 15hrs and filter every 2nd change. Always comes out still quite yellow - lite brown.
Using a fully synthetic motorbike oil. NZ$18 a litre (around 9euro) but I buy it in 4l packs.
Did the same on my last bike (ktm) and never had any probs at all with over 180hrs.

Ultimately it's up to you but I'd suggest that if you go for a semi syn oil or non specific bike oil then change it more often.
Just my 2cents and I'm no expert

Thanks - I use fully synth oil, good quality stuff. Might stick at 10 but could be tempted by 15 when I am feeling lazy!

On recent 6 day, 2600 mile dual sport ride through Nevada and Oregon on the Trans American Trail I ended up not changing the oil at all.
I sent in the oil for analysis to see how it came out. Guess what? While not perfect, after a conversation the lab and looking at the results compared to when I sent in oil after 1000 miles I'm not overly concerned about changing the oil as often. A little more wear, but nothing alarming is what they told me.
I'll shoot for 1500 miles regularly, and can stretch it out when traveling if need be.
Again this is for dual sport riding, 50% mixed dirt roads and trails, 50% highway with appropriate DS gearing of 14/45 so I'm not winding out the motor most of the time. When riding single track locally I use 13/48 which still doesn't require me to wind on the motor to get to the trail.
I use a Scott's reusable metal oil filter.

Changing the oil every 10 hours seems like something serious racers could do, but for mere mortal trail/dual sport riders like myself I feel it's a waist of money. Then again, an 800 mile tarmac ride in one day like I finished my ride with seems pretty brutal for the motor, but the facts don't lie. I have 7400 miles on the 570, still running strong!
I'm no expert, that's why I sent the oil in to pro's.... come to your own conclusion for your type of riding with this data.

this may not help much but i've sent oil from my lt1 corvette engine to blackstone labs before and like to think that the knowledge and expertise behind this analysis is very sound :)

There is a huge community that trusts Terry and his company and personally, i'm really really glad to see this kind of report shown!

thx Lost Rider!

Hey Lost Rider, how on earth can you ride 800 tarmac miles in one day on your 570?? You must have and Iron butt and steel balls man!!! I'm knackered after 50 miles.

Thank jeff, that's also good to hear for myself about Blackstone. I'm not going to make a habit out of going that far between changes, it's just good to have some real data to support what many have been finding with the 70º being a pretty bulletproof motor for the long haul. Barton from the Husaberg Adventure Team just rode his 570 from South America home to Montana, hardly following the book on maintenance with no issues.

Determination and an Airhawk seat pad.
I do enjoy Iron Butt rides on my other bikes, never thought I'd do something like that on the Husa, but I'm a freelance worker, something came up that I needed to be home for straight away, so I did it. It hurt and took a few days to recover from.

Real good comparison. But you did see that the viscosity changes a lot. Would this mean that the oil is easier pressed out between gears under load?

While I go along with 10 hour oil changes for trail and dual sport, I believe that changing the oil filter with each oil change is ordinarily way overkill. Changing the oil filter at every third oil change is plenty often enough.

Thanks for the feedback and views.

Having also had feedback from a mechanic who did dome work on my bike a while ago, I am going to stick with the 10 hour oil change and filters every 3 changes.

Mechanic basically said it was one of the cheapest ways to help keep the bike in good condition and at about £10 a change of oil, I'm happy with that. I use good quality Castrol 10W50. Plug always comes out clean, no filings - filters also clean when changed.

Also change the air filter regularly - which is important!
