390 compared to 350

So, I have a 390 which I love, which has fantastic handling and outstanding power/torque. But one day it will get old and I will need to change (sob, sob).

My thought was that I would most likely move to a Husaberg 350 so had a go on a new KTM 350 at an event last weekend. I was so disappointed - engine sounded dull and power was really flat compared to a 390. I believe this is the same engine as on the new Husaberg 350.

How have others found the Husaberg 350? Is 450 the way to go?

you probably won't need to replace it for a long time. there's a guy in spain running a fleet of FEs as hire bikes. he's been impresssed with the longevity of the 70 degree engines. he's got an FE390 which he's clocked up over 40000km without any engine work yet.

When I rode the 390 I thought it ran out of beans that last 10>20% compared to my 450 so is suspect that's how the 350 feels to you.
Mate of mine went from 450 berg to 350exc & thought it had plenty of allround guts
Have a spin on 450 mate then that will tick that question.
Think your local to me so can hook up next time out & you can have a spin

logic says that the 350 should have at worst 10% less power but because it has a far better power to weight ratio I would have thought that it was only on top end in the open that the 390 could be better?

any kind of twisties and I must say those extra 10KG are going to tell! I think the 390 is very 'flickable' but it weighed another 10KG...

Cheers Taffy and Faksey

The 390 has such lovely grunt I hoped that the 350 would be the same but it felt (and sounded!!) so flat. I think if you rang the 350's neck it would fly but the fun of the 390 is the grunt it has throughout the revs. Just hoped that the 350 (which has brilliant reviews) might be similar or even better than the 390.......

Hence curious if there was anyone who has gone 390 to 350 and how they had found it. In the meantime, looks like the 390 will see me into retirement when I can sell it for a profit as a classic!!

10kg weight difference? How?

Motor alone can't be that much lighter. It's dohc on the 350 vs sohc on 390. Frame and swingarm make the difference then?

Bikez.com:

husaberg 390 = 114 kg
husaberg 350 = 108.5 kg
ktm 350 = 108.5 kg

+ different weight distribution and center of rotating mass.

my 570 is 122KG with a bit of fuel, handguards, HD tubes but otherwise standard. I think 6 kilos is tosh!

well after doing 1000+ miles of gnarly tight single track and several enduros on my FE 390 last season , I gave it up and got the new 13 fe 350. I can tell you its a far superior bike for the tight technical single track !excellent and predictable power delivery ( like the 390) but far lighter,no excessive heat from the engine,no fuel boiling ,no constant stalling, and not that top heavy feeling when stuck in difficult areas! the 390 did have a much more plush feeling in the extreme rocks. my 390 was a great trail bike or for the wide open fire cuts but hard on an old guy in the tight stuff.

By the way, thanks Fakesy for feedback - where are you based? Do you get on the Plain much? Will look out for you!

very interesting, and to think that the 390 was considered a break through!

what is the difference in power above say the first couple of gears where the 350's lighter weight would count?

interesting that the old 390 open cartridge forks seemed to give a plush rider compared to the CC forks?

MY 2011 390 had the CC forks, I loved the bike but all the mapping, pipe wrap and gas fuel tank insulation would not keep it from habitual stalling at 3 liters or less fuel! and on hot days the fuel would boil!!

I've a 350 Berg, its a high reving engine like any 250 four banger. The 390 has a longer stroke engine like the KTM 400. trail riding the 390 ever time. Racing the 350, and it will trail ride like a 390 but i need to be a bit less lazy on the throttle. to be lucky to own the new 350 is brilliant it makes me feel young. Cough stall's were annoying so i've turned the idle up. I've also got a Husky 125 and the 350 has massive amounts of torque compared to my 125. The Berg turns a quickly as my 125 8O and is slowly turning me into a 17 year old i may need to sell it before i go mad crazy racing comps. The 4cs forks on the Berg are brilliant, the rear shock is great very confident inspiring. The clickers need adjusting from new if your 15stone with clothing i'll be happy to supply my setup. Out of all the bikes i've owned (530ktm, 400ktm, 300ktm, 250crf, husky 449, husky 310, husky 125) The 350 berg is best and yes i've ridden a 390 it reminds me of my old 400 ktm and that torque in the wet on the 390 is a liability. Most of my riding is racing i'm glad i waited for the 350 berg and the 350ktm excf has different suspension its only the 6days ktm 350 i'd look at as a replacement bike

Spud, great post - just what i was looking for! I see what you mean by having to throttle the 350 vs lazy style on the 390, which I like but can see you can get used to the 350. Thanks

Around andover way mate. I don't get out to much but if I do its usually up the plain, was up there 2 weekends ago &lots of army on exercise. It certernly looks like there clamping down up there
Where u from bud

i own a 2010 390, have solved all the heat issues with fan, exhaust wrap and tank insulation. I am very happy with my bike, but i cannot bare anymore the weight issue when i am not on the bike(mostly i ride slow technical trails).
Any other opinions out there? i consider buying the berg 350 2013.

I have a American 2010 390 and have never had one problem with it in 4 years

my main riding buddy has a 2013 350EXC that I swap and ride for kicks.. I prefer my 390 in everything except weight. His 350 runs like a 250, where my 390 runs like a 450.. the power delivery on the Berg is so much better IMO.. I just wish it weighed the same as his 350. I'd be happy on either bike, but I still enjoy riding my 390 a bit more
